Summary:

Summary:
This richly illustrated monograph looks at André Volten's stylistic development by examining a large number of works from his sculptural output. The writers also consider Volten's significance to sculpture in the Netherlands and on the international art scene, as well as discussing his development of the Constructivist aesthetic. Since the 1950s, André Volten (b. 1925) has made an exceptional contribution to sculpture in public space, and examples of his prolific output can be seen in the Netherlands and beyond. He has also been an important protagonist in the debate about the need for art within the public domain. The integration of architecture and visual art, as seen in Volten's work, demonstrates how these two disciplines can complement and invigorate each other.

Summary:
The walls of the Reichstag are covered with graffiti, written by victorious Soviet soldiers in 1945. Hidden for 30 years, the Reichstag graffiti were rediscovered by Norman Foster and his team when they began work on the building in 1995. They were preserved as part of Foster’s concept of the Reichstag as a ‘living museum’ of German history. Published at a time when the graffiti are threatened with eradication, this book offers an important visual and literary record. Deborah Lipstadt considers the arguments for and against the preservation of the graffiti: is the preservation, as some charge, "morally offensive" and "masochistic" or does it indicate a brave determination not to forget the tragedies of the past? And what does it mean and say about Germany today? Frederick Baker considers the graffiti as a monument to the individual and offers an historical account of the Battle of Berlin through the eyes of Red Army soldiers as they approached their ultimate goal, including the soldier who first raised the Red Flag above the Reichstag. This illustrated volume allows the inscriptions to be made accessible and understandable to a wider public for the first time.

Summary:
Urban Illustration features the most stunning and innovative street art from Berlin, where unknown local heroes and famous international street artists share a common canvas. In the course of documenting over 500 of the best examples of art work in the streets of this dynamic German capital, the book transcends it's core function as a city guide and becomes a magic carpet for armchair travelers and street art officionados alike. With a focus on popular techniques such as stencils, cutouts, markers and wheatpaste, the author Benjamin Wolbergs documents the diverse styles of artists including D*Face from London, Faile and Swoon from New York and Fuck Your Crew from Berlin, just to name a few. In addition to the images, 17 in-depth interviews give detailed information about the artists backgrounds and methods. A separate City map leads the way to the locations in the heart of Berlin where author Benjamin Wolbergs took his fascinating photographs, and where new street art is waiting to be discovered daily.

Summary:
Skateboarders are an increasingly common feature of the urban environment - recent estimates total 40 million world-wide. We are all aware of their often extraordinary talent and manoeuvres on the city streets. This book is the first detailed study of the urban phenomenon of skateboarding. It looks at skateboarding history from the surf-beaches of California in the 1950s, through the purpose-built skateparks of the 1970s, to the street-skating of the present day and shows how skateboarders experience and understand the city through their sport. Dismissive of authority and convention, skateboarders suggest that the city is not just a place for working and shopping but a true pleasure-ground, a place where the human body, emotions and energy can be expressed to the full.

Summary:
Building on the book "Art in a City" by John Willett, which surveyed the history of the visual arts in Liverpool, this collection of essays explores art in contemporary Liverpool and engages with the view from outside the City and outside Britain. It examines the often made but rarely challenged claim that Liverpool is ‘the most significant UK centre for art outside London’, and looks at the key institutional players, such as the Bluecoat and the Walker Art Gallery as well as all those that post-date Willett, including Tate Liverpool, Open Eye, FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology), and the Liverpool Biennial. There are discussions of the role of Liverpool as an arts city from the perspective of key artists who have worked in the city; of public vs private patronage in the arts, including the extent and role of public funding; of the changing nature of public art; of the social role of the arts; and of community participation in the arts. The book has a major consideration of the role of the arts in city regeneration and of the concept of ‘the creative industries’.
