Summary:
The projects brought together in this book refer to new architectures applied on locations that have experienced, firstly, sporadic warfare; secondly, areas where the earth has functioned as a source of geological workings; and thirdly, marginal territories and urban environments that have undergone industrial development. This initial structure proposes, then, three categories as points of reference for linking the contents, with sufficient flexibility for the final argument to be seen via other intersecting readings, tracing associations from one category to another. Thus, apart from the deliberate intensity of each intervention, and far from anchoring this in one or another group according to its nature, we present a wide range of projects hand led in terms of their specific singularities, while emphasizing their abilities and their potential to embrace new uses. Other documents are also presented to strengthen this argument, documents that provide alternatives to the architectural discipline and serve as possible comparable approaches: from the journalistic record to the clearly artistic contribution, taking in the scientific report. These documents will speak (also in terms of their particular uniqueness) of the abstraction and universalization of the degraded territory independently of the moment, its nature and causes. What, finally, the schemes presented share is that in terms of their execution they span a generally extended period of time; on top of that, the participation of institutions and administrative bodies as major sponsors; and, along with an impact on the contemporary landscape, a set of differentiated strategies and mechanisms of intervention

Summary:

Summary:
In summer 2001, Potsdam, one of the world’s famous sites of classical garden design, with the beautiful grounds of the Sans Souci Palace, will be staging international contributions which respond to the tasks and challenges in contemporary landscape architecture. A large number of internationally known landscape architects, artists and architects have come together to cultivate 60 hectares of public park, to redesign urban spaces and other sites where historical townscapes and nature conjoin, to develop avant-garde artistic features, and to create the central spectacular exhibition space. This book will present the various parks and artistic interventions in their finished state, accompanied by lavish illustrations and descriptive texts, thus ensuring that the book remains topical thoughout the festival and will be an enduring documentation long after the doors have been closed and the new park with its array of leisure and recreational facitilities has been developed.

Summary:
Since 1987 international exhibitions of contemporary art have taken place at Wanas in the south of Sweden. Artists exhibit their work in the park surrounding the medieval castle and in a barn. In this book, Marika Wachtmeister, director of the Wanas Foundation, describes her close collaboration with the artists as well as detailing the creative process from concept to completion. What is the process through which an idea becomes a work of art? This is the essential issue that Marika Wachtmeister addresses in her text on past exhibitions at Wanas. Art at Wanas provides a unique insight into the artistic process and contemporary art of today. In Swedish and English.

Summary:
Ferruccio Vitale is America's forgotten landscape architect. Though his works like Skylands and Longwood Gardens are well known, his name has been eclipsed by his contemporary, Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. Yet Vitale's influence on the modern direction of landscape design and his promotion of it as a profession is arguably more significant than Olmsted's. His unique designs and philosophy, which challenged the then-dominant pictorial mode of landscape architecture, influenced generations of followerss, and is still felt today. Vitale (1875-1933) developed his rationale designs, based on the principles of composition from the fine arts and architecture, in both civic commissions and, most notably, at the country estates of captains of industry and finance, such as Rodman Wanamaker, Pierre S. DuPont, Solomon R. Guggenheim, and Condé Nast. He introduced an idealized and abstracted type of formal design that created beautiful spaces, structured large sites, and reflected informal and relaxed plant compositions. "Ferruccio Vitale" tours over 40 of his masterworks, photographed by some of the best landscape photographers of the time, including Samuel Gottscho. It recounts the compelling story of a life in the twentieth century, influenced by immigrant dreams, social clubs, and professional connections, and its culmination in some of the greatest landscapes of the 20th century.

Summary:
This book is a summary of the Third Rosa Barba European Landscape Award held in Barcelona, Spain in November 2003. The European Lanscape Architecture Biennial has become a point of reference for European landscape design and has expressed the desire to investigate and debate landscape intervention from the perspective of its own discipline and from the viewpoint of other fields involved in research and construction. The goal is to explore the limits of various new approaches to nature in order to understand and learn from its idiosyncrasies.
