Summary:
This is a selection of two hundred of the best articles and other writings by Gertrude Jekyll, who 'changed the face of England more than any save the Creator himself and, perhaps, Capability Brown'. Although Miss Jekyll designed around four hundred gardens, none remains as she intended and few exist today in any recognizable form. Her enduring influence has been achieved not through her spade but through her pen. She published fifteen books and contributed well over a thousand articles, notes and letters to numerous magazines and newspapers. But although the books are well known, until now, all but a handful of her other writings have been accessible only to scholars - a situation that this selection redresses. This book covers themes that include garden planning, wild and woodland gardening, climbing plants, water gardening and garden ornament, and includes selected articles. This is a gem of garden writing that all who are interested in Jekyll, planting and design will be delighted to discover.

Summary:

Summary:
Descanso Gardens is one of Los Angeles's oldest botanical gardens. Initially a Spanish rancho and later the estate of publisher and horticulturist E. Manchester Boddy, the 160-acre lot was granted to the people of Los Angeles and includes one of the world's finest collections of camellias and oaks. Warren Marr is part of a long tradition of photographers who have responded creatively to the garden and its timeless appeal. His photographic explorations of what he refers to as a "natural light box" have been called "lyrical and luminous" by Getty Museum curator Anne Lyden. Marr's lush panoramic images combined with essays on the significance of the garden plants and history make Descanso an elegant volume for photography and garden lovers.

Summary:
The history of European landscape design has its beginnings in the early cultures of the Mediterranean. Again and again, especially during the Renaissance, ancient parks and gardens have been imitated as archetypes. The park is still a site of design activity today: human beings use living material to create an artificial landscape, a paradise. This book not only recounts the history of the garden—it conjures it up before the reader’s eyes, from the Garden of Eden and the Hanging Gardens of Nebuchadnezzar to the first book on botany and the gardens of the Renaissance, from the invention of the lawnmower to the land art movement in the United States, Hängende Gärten II (Hanging Gardens II) at the Hanover Expo by the Dutch architectural firm MVRDV, and the Gazebo-Berg (Gazebo Mountain) of the Swiss artist couple Studer/van den Berg at the 2005 world’s fair in Japan. Every single "station" of this journey through gardens and time is illustrated by an entire double page, with pointedly written texts and an abundance of historical and contemporary images.

Summary:
Cemetery and landscape studies have been hallmarks of North African archaeology for more than one hundred years. "Mortuary landscapes of North Africa" is the first book to combine these two fields by considering North African cemeteries within the context of their wider landscapes. This unique perspective allows for new interpretations of notions of identity, community, imperial influence, and sacred space. Based on a wealth of material research from current fieldwork, this collection of essays investigates how North African funerary monuments acted as regional boundaries, markers of identity and status, and barometers of cultural change. The essays cover a broad range in terms of space and time – from southern Libya to eastern Algeria, and from the seventh century BCE to the seventh century CE. A comprehensive introduction explains the importance of the 'landscape perspective' that these studies bring to North African funerary monuments, while individual case-studies address such topics as the African way of death among the Garamantes, the ritual reasons for the location of certain Early Christian tombs, Punic burials, Roman cupula tombs, and the effects of rapid state formation and imperial incorporation on tomb builders.

Summary:
The United States Department of Agriculture Pomological Watercolor Collection encompasses 7,497 botanical watercolor paintings of evolving fruit and nut varieties, alongside specimens introduced by USDA plant explorers from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Assembled between 1886 and 1942, the collection's remarkable, botanically accurate watercolors were executed by some 21 professional artists (including nine women). Authored largely before the widespread application of photography, the watercolors were intended to aid accurate identification and examination of fruit varietals, for the nation’s fruit growers. Documenting the transformation of American pomology, the science of fruit breeding and production, and the horticultural innovations accountable for contemporary fruit cultivation and consumption, the USDA’s collection offers fascinating anthropological and horticultural insights concerning the fruits we ecstatically devour, and why.
