Summary:

Summary:
A new wave of intellectually rigorous and iconoclastic Swiss designers are carving their niche in a new graphic language. By combining traditional high quality “Swiss Style” with advanced media, they are giving rise to a progressive style of visual expression. Seven years after publishing “Swiss Graphic Design”, we present “Altitude” - a new generation of flourishing contemporary designers, giving insight into the impact, essence and diversity of the work and evaluating the significant evolution of illustration and typography in recent years. An increasing number of designers are working internationally with interdisciplinary design practices in typography, vector graphics, photography, interiors and web design. They bring about an experimental, playful and humorous element while maintaining the minimalist approach and precision that gives Swiss Design its universally recognized trademark. Altitude is an expansive volume that showcases and examines current trends as well as providing an analysis of contemporary Swiss Design through visuals, texts, interviews and commentary from the designers and editors themselves.

Summary:
An analysis of the basic tenets of typography, this book will appeal to the conformist and the non-conformist in everyone. One side of this guide presents the ten main rules, or ‘commandments’, of type design, addressing such aspects of typographic doctrine as legibility, alignment and capitalization; the other shows how type can successfully subvert these rules, presenting ‘sacrilegious’ visual alternatives. In support of the commandments Felton includes a list of twelve ‘disciples’, those internationally renowned graphic designers whom he identifies as rule-abiding, including such figures as Eric Gill, Jan Tschichold and Erik Spiekermann. Confronting these are his ‘fallen angels’, including such experimental typographers as David Carson, Jeffery Keedy, Phil Baines and Jonathan Barnbrook.

Summary:
Artists' books have emerged over the last 25 years as the quintessential contemporary art form, addressing subjects as diverse as poetry and politics, incorporating a full spectrum of artistic media and bookmaking methods, and taking every conceivable form. Female painters, sculptors, calligraphers, and printmakers, as well a growing community of hobbyists, have played a primary role in developing this new mode of artistic expression. "The book as art" presents more than 100 of women's artist books created by artists such as Meret Oppenheim, May Stevens, Kara Walker, and Renee Stout and book artists such as Susan King, Ruth Laxson, Claire Van Vliet, and Julie Chen. Culled from over 800 unique or limited-edition volumes held by the National Museum of Women in the Arts, these books explore the form as a container for ideas. Descriptions of the works are accompanied by illustrations and reflections by their makers, along with essays and an introduction by author Audrey Niffenegger. "The book as art" accompanies the exhibition of the same name at the Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., beginning in October 2006.

Summary:
Explicit sexual imagery has erupted in every medium and on every surface. While some react to it by pointing and laughing, hardly anyone has stopped to seriously consider its impact. Behind this phenomenon lies the normalization of pornography, which along with the complete turnaround in social attitudes to it, has been one of the most momentous developments in contemporary life. In "Designing pornotopia", Rick Poynor explores recent advertising and design and the invasion of sexual imagery into everyday life, revealing how advertising walks the fine line between prudish and vulgar imagery. Developing the discussion of Poynor's previous anthology, "Obey the giant", "Designing pornotopia" covers a wide area of subjects, from magazines, billboard advertising, branding, illustration, photography, tattoos, and music graphics to architecture and includes interviews with architect Rem Koolhaas and maverick American graphic designer and performance artist Elliott Earls. Along the way Poynor reassesses the early work of Peter Saville and tracks the unstoppable rise of Stefan Sagmeister, among others.
