Summary:
Net zero energy buildings, equilibrium buildings or carbon neutral cities - depending on location and the reasons for making the calculation, the numbers are run differently. The variety of terms in use indicates that a scientific method is still lacking - which is a problem not just in regard to international communication, but also with respect to planning processes as a response to energy challenges. The clarification and meaning of the most important terms in use is extremely important for their implementation. Since October 2008, a panel of experts from an international energy agency has concerned itself with these topics as part of a project entitled Towards Net Zero Energy Solar Buildings. The objective is to analyse exemplary buildings that are near a zero-energy balance in order to develop methods and tools for the planning, design and operation of such buildings.

In a very short time America has realized that global warming poses real challenges to the nation's future. "The Agile City "engages the fundamental question: what to do about it? Journalist and urban analyst James S. Russell argues that we'll more quickly slow global-warming -and blunt its effects- by retrofitting cities, suburbs, and towns. "The Agile City" shows that change undertaken at the building and community level can reach carbon-reduction goals rapidly. Russell highlights tactics that create multiplier effects, which means that ecologically driven change can shore-up economic opportunity, can make more productive workplaces, and can help revive neglected communities.

Summary:
Heat | Cool offers strategies for an energetically sensible and suitable approach to building conditioning as well as its design and constructional integration. In addition to building and facilities services, it places special emphasis on construction and design measures. How much the building itself can achieve in the context of the given climatic, topographical, and town planning framework conditions and to what extent additional installations are required for conditioning, which construction measures are appropriate for which types of tasks within a sustainable and integrated planning approach - all of these topics are discussed on the basis of project examples. The book highlights both the currently available heating, ventilation, and cooling systems as well as the supporting aspects of material properties and the building lifecycle, thus enabling the reader to make a balanced and well - informed selection.

Summary:
As a concept, Emergence has captured the zeitgeist, embodying the pervasive cultural interest in genetics and biological sciences. In the sciences, Emergence is an explanation of how natural systems have evolved and maintained themselves, and it has also been applied to artificial intelligence, information systems, economics and climate studies. The potential of the mathematics of Emergence that underlie the complex systems of nature is now being realised by engineers and architects for the production of complex architectural forms and effects, in advanced manufacturing of ‘smart’ materials and processes, and in the innovative designs of active structures and responsive environments. This book provides a detailed exploration of the architectural and engineering consequences of this paradigm, and a detailed analysis of geometries, processes and systems to be incorporated into new methods of working.
