Durant le dernier tiers du siècle, le livre réformé régresse malgré l’ouverture d’ateliers typographiques protestants en France même. Le mouvement réformé perd de son élan. Il se met sur la défensive sans parler de la politisation croissante des conflits confessionnels. À Genève, la perte du marché français contraint les imprimeurs à se recycler dans le livre non religieux, humaniste, juridique, médical, parfois même dans la théologie catholique. La concurrence des imprimeurs de France et des Pays-Bas reste modeste. Bref, après une période d’intense propagande du vivant de Calvin, le livre réformé prend une place modeste moins orienté vers la conquête de nouveaux adeptes que vers la polémique savante ou l’éducation religieuse.
