Summary:
Anyone who has traveled in Romania or has an interest in the country has admired the striking tradition of exterior house decoration. This book surveys and illustrates the historical forms of Romanian house decoration, elements of innovation in the tradition (in design, materials, methods, etc.) and examines the aesthetics of the designs as well as their metaphorical and symbolic functions. The fieldwork from which the bulk of this book derives was done in a period that represents a watershed point between ancient styles of house decoration and the changing tastes and materials of the modern world. It was during this time that the Communist regime was breaking down and a new order was about to arise. House decoration at that time was a vivid vernacular expression both of the peoples' frustrations and of their unflagging optimism and creativity. The illustrations are beautiful, comprehensive and unique; the bibliography is extensive, with English explanations of all foreign titles.

Summary:
This uniquely wide-ranging book explores British medieval houses, from humble to grand, in greater detail than ever before. Anthony Quiney synthesizes the most current archaeological, architectural, and historical findings to present a survey of houses throughout Britain from the early fifth century to the ascent of James VI of Scotland to the English throne in 1603. The book features over 300 illustrations that include medieval depictions of houses and their occupants, historic prints and photographs, as well as numerous explanatory drawings. In the first part of the book, Quiney considers a variety of political, religious, and economic contexts and their influence on medieval building. The second part looks at the houses themselves: royal palaces; the houses of burgesses, craftsmen, and clergy; hovels of the impecunious; as well as social buildings such as guildhalls, almshouses, and hospitals.

Summary:
Although the interiors found in aristocratic houses have received much attention over the years, little has been written about how the interiors of middle-class homes have evolved. This attractive and deeply informed book traces the development-in word and picture-of vernacular British interiors. The book is a greatly expanded and revised version of Ayres's earlier work The Book of the "Home in Britain" and deals with a wide range of subjects, including heating and lighting, details of doors, doorways and staircases, and the use of colour. Embellished with illustrations from early sources and the author's own line drawings together with photographs of surviving interiors and their details, the book provides evidence for the treatment of historic interiors and inspiration for schemes of decoration today.

Summary:
Providing a comprehensive account of one of the most formative historical periods, this book uniquely describes Renaissance architecture as the physical manifestation of economic, social and political change. Shifts in architectural style and design are described in parallel with Italy's economic and demographic growth, external and internal conflict and the evolution of urban and regional government. It covers the full extent of the Renaissance period, charting the era's medieval roots and its transformation into Mannerist and Baroque tendencies. Encompassing Palermo and Naples, the book fully covers northern, central and southern Italy, surpassing the conventional literature that tends to focus solely on northern Italy.
