Summary:
Over the course of the 20th century many of the best garden designers have looked to the past for inspiration; with the approach of the millennium, however, a fresh approach to garden design - minimalism - has moved to the forefront. The philosophy of minimalism, rooted simultaneously in classicism and modernism, has had a strong influence on architecture and interior and graphic design, as well as landscape. Minimalist gardens, with their emphasis on clean lines, pure form, and a strong sense of place, are closely related to contemporary architecture and lifestyles. New trends in more relaxed and ecologically aware planting have contributed greatly to the development of such green spaces, and the creative use of trees and hedges to define and control space is often an important design element. In this volume, award-winning garden designer Christopher Bradley-Hole has drawn together a great variety of minimalist gardens from around the world - large and small, urban and rural. The projects are grouped into thematic chapters, including the landscape garden, pools and water gardens, courtyard gardens, and terrace and roof gardens. Among the designers are Vladimir Sitta, John Pawson, Luis Barragán, Seth Stein, Jacques Wirtz, Martha Schwartz, Shodo Suzuki, and Isamu Noguchi. Large color photographs and detailed images show the gardens in context; the text discusses the inspiration behind each garden, the relationship of space and proportions, and the frequent use of unusual materials and imaginative planning. Directories of materials and plants for the perfect minimalist garden are included as well.

Summary:
According to flower artist Toshiro Kawase, scattered throughout this book are “flowers, beloved in the new and the old Kyoto, that grew in the beautiful soil of Kyoto’s local character, elegant culture, and tea ceremony tradition.” With arrangements dedicated to each month of the year, it is a gorgeous and delicate homage to the quintessentially Japanese practice of ikebana – the art of giving life to flowers. Bringing flowers indoors can sanctify your living space, soothe the heart, and introduce a spiritual presence (kami) to your home. In this way, these purportedly everyday or benign arrangements become sublime beacons of nature, colour, shape, and beauty.

Summary:
Irene Kopelman’s work explores the parallel worlds of artists and researchers. In 2012, she applied for a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship, “an opportunity that could ignite endless ideas”. This book is the result of the work she produced during visits to the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama. Without formal scientific training, Kopelman hoped to achieve an understanding of methods in field biology, and contacted three researchers to assist as interlocutors: Stuart J. Davies (forest ecology), Owen McMillan (adaptive variation), and Bill Wcislo (animal behaviour). She replicates the forms of woody vines, mangrove roots, and randomly scattered crab pellets.

Summary:
The first major illustrated monograph in many years on the history of gardens, landscape design, and architecture, focusing on both the Western and Eastern traditions and their influences. This book surveys every period in garden design and landscape architecture, from classical antiquity and the medieval cloisters to the latest trends in modern design. From the Roman gardens at Hadrian’s villa to the modern work of landscape architects, historical and contemporary gardens are showcased with special attention to the relationship between gardens and houses. The informative text reveals the evolutions, transformations, influences, and trends that characterize these landscapes, putting into context their aesthetic appeal. Gardens are unique, reflecting the landscape, flora, and climate of their environments as well as the heritage, history, architectural styles, and influences of society. From the fountain gardens of Persia to the prairie-style gardens currently popular, from the Zen gardens of Buddhist temples to the Impressionist gardens in Giverny, the huge variety of gardens is a testament to our age-old desire to tame and refashion nature.

Summary:
This volume describes over 50 of the world's most powerful, harmful, legendary and storied plants – from the screaming mandrake to calming St John's Wort, to predicting the weather with seaweed, the creation of salves for broken hearts, sore heads, protection from evil spirits and to even induce immortality. Wise women, apothecaries, witches, herbalists: whatever you like to call them, those who cultivate plants for their apparent mystical properties have existed for thousands of years. The Witch's Garden tells the story of our folkloric fascination with these magical specimens, documenting the beliefs and rituals surrounding the natural world. Illustrated with pages from herbals held within the archives of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, along with botanical illustrations and archival images depicting magic and mayhem, The Witch's Garden beautifully evokes the bewitching nature of mysterious plants.
