Summary:
Exposed concrete is one of the most fascinating and demanding building materials. To work with it calls for technical precision of the highest order, especially where the architecture’s character is determined by the material’s special qualities. Architects such as Tadao Ando, Frank Gehry, Daniel Libeskind, Gigon-Guyer, and Diener & Diener have defined the highest standard for the use of exposed concrete with their buildings. In its first part, this book presents groundbreaking examples of exposed concrete architecture by ten international architects and analyzes their treatment of the material. In its second part, it describes the key aspects of exposed concrete (surface, color, sheeting, framework, seams, composition, etc.); discusses the concreting process in detail; and gives advice on avoiding defects and writing successful proposals.

In galleries and museums, one’s perception of art, space, and atmosphere is largely determined by lighting. But which light settings should art and museum experts and exhibition designers choose, and on what basis are those choices made? Pioneering LED technologies make customized lighting scenarios possible, turning artificial light into an interactive material in museum architecture – not only in terms of design practice, but also in terms of real-time spatial experiences. Computer-controlled lighting technologies are breaking boundaries, allowing the individual to take full control of lighting design. ''Light Up'' explores the potential of dynamic artificial lighting technologies in museum architecture, offering new insights into the use of light in exhibition spaces.

Summary:
In response to climate change, architects have been seeking a contemporary expression for durable, solid and homogeneous wall structures made of clay, wood, brick, concrete and recycled materials. This book follows 25 projects to analyze construction methods that predominantly involve materials that have a single origin and can be easily dismantled. It looks at a variety of different ways and scales in which architects have dealt with issues of mass and materiality, both in terms of design and construction. Structured according to the specific materials, the book allows direct comparisons, and renders visible solid building typologies and forms. Numerous drawings, developed especially for this book, document the projects. Two essays as well as interviews with Pepe Marquez and Arno Richter examine the strategies and background of monolithic architecture and solid construction methods.

Autour de nous, des objets en bois. Futiles.

Summary:
The environmental impacts of construction are momentous. How can architects minimise these by making responsible material choices? Material choices have a global impact. The design and construction industry are responsible for 39% of all carbon emissions in the world. Despite the great desire among architects to address this, it can be difficult to compare materials directly, let alone understand the repercussions of selecting materials for use in different parts of a building or of sourcing them from across the world. Showcasing the latest thought leadership from subject experts across the industry, this primer sets out the various considerations and parameters for specifying a particular material. It empowers architects with the knowledge of which materials are available, how best to use them, and what their future holds as the industry continues to innovate. Each chapter will be devoted to a single material and will consider environmental impacts holistically, looking at health and biodiversity impacts, among other issues.

In her book, the trained carpenter and architect Judith Resch looks at what scope still exists in modern window design and construction. The process of simplification is more difficult to achieve for windows than for most building components, since windows, due to their function, must meet high technical specifications. She presents a variety of window design projects that have one thing in common: they pursue a singular design concept using the simplest possible means. All projects are presented in detail with technical drawings and photographs.

Summary:
The relationship between mankind and stone is elemental and deeply ingrained into all of us. Stone, after all, has been the primary building material for more than five thousand years of human history, and it continues to record our triumphs and failures. In this searching history of the expressive and practical use of stone, Richard Rhodes unlocks the underlying principles of stone;s highest and best use, and he illuminates rules codified by the medieval Freemason's guild. Century after century of stone use gradually produced the closely-guarded ''Sacred Rules'' as they are collectively known, considered to be the most important and closely-kept property of the ancient stone guildsmen. Previously available only to the initiated, the rules are explained here through historical examples and photographs for the first time ever. In these times of rapid development and expansive urbanization, Rhodes implores us to explore the essential qualities of stone that emerge from the Sacred Rules, not only to rediscover the ancient and traditional knowledge that governed its use for so long, but also to find a roadmap for how future generations might thoughtfully recapture the power this material offers.

Most modern buildings are built from diverse materials, but few confront their manifold composition as a question of both design and performance. This book takes a close look at a series of global building traditions and contemporary practices to uncover the possibilities and challenges of working with mixed materials. Visually stunning, color-coded drawings reveal the materials and construction for every project. Through case studies, design experiments and writings, the authors examine the opportunities of heterogeneous construction for contemporary, sustainable, circular, and culturally situated architecture. With contributions by Jeannette Kuo, Ajay Manthripragada, and Jesús Vassallo, and photography by Naho Kubota. Graphic design by Andrew LeClair.
