Summary:
Linoleum is a natural material with quite an eventful history of use since its invention in 1864 by the British entrepreneur Frederik Walton. Its first golden age was between 1900 and 1930, when numerous renowned designers - among them Josef Hoffmann or Bruno Paul - designed both collections and patterns. Even Peter Behrens - before he became the "artistic counselor" to AEG in Berlin in 1908 - tried his hand at designing linoleum patterns, to the point of developing a complete "corporate design" from stationary to catalogs to exhibition architecture for the Anker- Linoleum-Werke at Delmenhorst. Bauhaus architects such as Bruno Taut or Mies van der Rohe used linoleum in housing projects as an inexpensive and hardwearing but also decorative floor-covering. This book is the first to present this historically and ecologically equally important material in its various guises. Experts in the field contributed essays about the history of linoleum, its "discovery" by modernist designers and architects and its renaissance in contemporary design and architecture.

Summary:
Beirut-born, Paris-based architect Lina Ghotmeh (born 1980) specializes in ultra-contemporary, sustainable public and industrial buildings made from locally sourced natural materials. Her 2023 design for the Hermès leather workshop in Normandy, using the region’s traditional bricks, was the first manufacturing building in France to achieve net-zero carbon emissions. Light, another natural and physical phenomenon, has also been another source of inspiration for Ghotmeh. Her research on this topic, collected in Windows of Light, draws upon examples from centuries of visual culture. Ghotmeh explores the symbols, myths and innovations of light, and outlines how it fundamentally shapes our biological, astronomical and architectural environments. Anchoring the many representations of light is a photographic narrative that reminds us that access to artificial light in many regions of the world remains a privilege rather than a right.

Summary:
Timber is a renewable material that also creates warm, welcoming spaces offering an emotional quality to their users. Light on Wood is a very personal story about how to design with mass timber. The pioneering architectural practice of atelierjones in Seattle, founded by Susan H. Jones, has diligently worked to decarbonize our built environment. In fact, it was one of the first practices in the US to use mass timber. Many beautiful buildings ensued over the past two decades, often developed in cooperation with local communities. But the office also investigated the behavior of CLT in case of fire and thus contributed to much-needed changes in building code. This book documents atelierjones’ multifaceted approach of design, research and advocacy and shows an attractive selection of the projects that have resulted from it.

Summary:

Summary:
Material Matters brings together texts and work by theorists and practitioners who are making material central to their work and reflects the diverse areas of inquiry which are expanding current material discourse. Focusing on the cultural, political, economic, technological and intellectual forces which shape material practices in architecture, the contributors draw on disciplines ranging from philosophy, history and pedagogy to art practice and digital and low-tech fabrication. By paying critical attention to material, a wide range of issues emerge in Material Matters which are otherwise excluded from architectural discourse, issues that shape and determine the buildings we make, the processes we use and the ways we understand them. Beautifully illustrated and designed, this book is a unique collection which will be of great interest to architectural practitioners and theorists who want to consider the wider implications of material practice, and to students who are developing their own approach to making buildings.
