En Angleterre, sur l’autre rive de la Manche, de la même façon, l’artiste a symétriquement parcouru la côte vers l’ouest en partant d’Eastbourne jusqu’au cap Lizard en Cornouailles, pour, parvenue à l’extrémité de la péninsule, revenir vers Maer Cliff près de Bude, au nord-ouest du Dartmoor National Park, face au pays de Galles. Ce que l’on voit ici est d’une nature indéterminée et tient aussi bien du relevé topographique que de la photographie de paysage. Très peu de ciel, voire pas du tout dans ces images qu’il est quasi impossible de situer si l’on n’a pas repéré sur une carte l’endroit où elles ont été prises. Depuis 2015, le camp de Moria, sert de centre d’enregistrement administratif et de zone d’attente pour des dizaines de milliers de réfugiés venus de nombreux pays en guerre (Afghans, Syriens, Congolais, Somaliens, etc.), et s’est trouve´ au centre de la question européenne sur l’accueil des réfugiés et le droit d’asile. Qualifie´ d’enfer sur terre, le camp a connu, en janvier 2020, un niveau de surpopulation jamais atteint puis a été touché par l’épidémie de Covid. En septembre, il est entièrement détruit par un incendie déclenché par les refugiés révoltés contre leur sort. Ce livre raconte l’ampleur de cette nouvelle tragédie, mêlant les photographies de l’artiste et des images extraites de vidéos envoyées par les réfugiés avec qui il a noué une relation, et constitue ainsi un document unique.

Summary:
This book is the result of eight years of research and the production of a series of photographs taken in 2013, 2015 and 2018 during Gianpaolo Arena’s travels through Vietnam. Both the photographs and the essays examine the complex bond between landscape and human civilization. In this sprawling sequence of urban growth, places and portraits we find continual antitheses of periods and customs that sometimes clash, at others meld. This project captures fragments of different rituals and ways of life of the contemporary Vietnamese society. The author offer a glimpse of Vietnam’s present and future cities between time and decay, culture and capitalism, folklore and propaganda.

Lars Rolfsted Mortensen is an architect and photographer based in Copenhagen, Denmark. His photographic works are indebted to the New Topographics and revolves around subjects such as urban transformation, infrastructure and the notion of ‘multiple modernities’ as witnessed in the geographically diverse trajectories of modern urban development.
