Summary:

Tokuko Ushioda launched her career as a photographer around 1975, befriending figures such as Shigeo Gocho and Fusako Kodama, who became important inspirations. While studying under Kiyoji Otsuji, she crossed paths with Shinzo Shimao, who would later become her husband. In 1978, Ushioda and Shimao had a daughter and got married. The next year, the family moved into a single-room unit in a historic Western-style house. In this intimate setting, she continued to photograph, resulting in a wealth of images with a nostalgic familiarity and refined calmness. Published as a set of two books, this collection can be considered the starting point to her photography.

Summary:
Photographer and documentarian Ian Reid was born and raised in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. In 2018 he set out to photograph 23 public housing developments in Brooklyn from above. His goal was to preserve the architecture and to present the structures without any preconceived notions of what goes on within. The images are framed by the streets they are defined by, often showing how they look with the changing seasons. Gentrification and development have changed the surroundings of the public housing, but the buildings and its residents for the most part stay the same. ''Complex geometry'' respects the true residents of Brooklyn and pays homage to where Reid grew up and still spends a great deal of his time.

Summary:
''Ukrainian railroad ladies'' is a series of portraits of traffic controllers and safety officers at railroads of Ukraine. This project is also an exploration of why these professions still exist in the 21st century, given the almost entire automatization of railroad crossings in the country. It is a study of the anthropological and social aspects of this phenomenon and the overall role of Ukraine’s railroad system. While working on the project, Sasha Maslov – known for his social documentary portraits, where the main focus is always the hero in his substantive environment – has traveled all over Ukraine. ''Ukrainian railroad ladies'' is more than 50 photos of women who work on Ukrainian Railways. They seem to be a symbol of certain things in the country that don’t change, standing firm in the present as a defiant nod to the past. Unfazed by the passing of trains and time, they are here to stay.

Summary:
With this publication, visual artist Michiel Kluiters investigates how space (or spatiality) works in photography and how it can become an instrument for narration. A series of photographed spaces open up a dialogue and hint at intimate stories. Walls appear roughly textured, seeming to address the tactile rather than visual sense. The pictured spaces look like unfinished buildings or abandoned ruins, either still under construction or already in decline. Kluiters instils these images with a temporal sense, leaving an unanswered promise of eventual fulfilment or a lingering memory of an irrevocable epoch. We must wonder, is this a possible dystopian future or the remnants of a utopian past?
