Other scenes depict the pre-dawn emptiness of Hong Kong's streets and alleys bathed in the colours of artificial light.

Summary:
From Lithuania, Ukraine, and Georgia to Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, photographer Ai Hoshino journeys throughout the former Soviet sphere of influence in northern Eurasia in her quest to document the bygone relics of a vast socialist state. This collection of photographs focuses on abandoned vehicles and other modes of transport that still remain in the former countries of the Soviet Union. These include cable cars, Ferris wheels, automobiles, railroads, airplanes, ships, tanks, trucks, and more. Although they will disappear into oblivion in the not too distant future, Hoshino captures these silent but eloquent inorganics in their final resting places.

Summary:
‘'Amidst the fire, I am not burnt’' is a documentary approach to the iconic landscape shaped by Vesuvius. It investigates the different temporalities, scientific and popular perceptions, historic and present-day photographic representations, and stories inscribed in this cyclical landscape. The book interweaves documentary writing and photography in a varied constellation of subjects and experiences, from derelict quarries, archaeological sites, and souvenirs, to a parking lot, bonfires, and lovers parked along the road at night. As each eruption of the volcano adds a layer on top of the last, Vesuvius continues to sense, store, destroy, shape, and transmit information.

Soviet architectural design often evokes images of brutalism, Stalinist style, and austere, straight-lined concrete blocks. However, objects such as the thousands of derelict bus stops scattered throughout the former Eastern Bloc and Central Asia seem to have a different aesthetic that surpasses the scope of these preconceptions. Summary:
Soviet architectural design often evokes images of brutalism, Stalinist style, and austere, straight-lined concrete blocks. However, objects such as the thousands of derelict bus stops scattered throughout the former Eastern Bloc and Central Asia seem to have a different aesthetic that surpasses the scope of these preconceptions. Rather than being mass-produced, many of them were created by local architects, students, or artists, and still retain a quiet charm today. Whether distinctively shaped, decorated with beautiful mosaics, or painted in once-bright colours, these bus stops that time forgot are lovingly documented by photographer Ai Hoshino.

Summary:
Geoffrey James directs his gaze to the in-between spaces and forgotten places that resist the idea of a cohesive national identity. With an equable eye, James documents the ephemeral and the monumental: a demolition derby in Quebec, how an inmate at Kingston Penitentiary has decorated his cell, the Dickensian side door of Massey Hall in Toronto. The photographs in this collection celebrate the everyday while meditating on the issues James’s adopted home faces: the bifurcation of rural and urban, rapid growth and increasing inequality, and its journey toward truth and reconciliation. Linked by views taken from train windows from British Columbia to Nova Scotia, James’s unofficial portrait of Canada brings into sharp relief the unfinished business of the nation as it lurches into the next century. Canadian Photographs includes a conversation between the photographer and Peter Galassi, former Chief Curator of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art.

Summary:
What does the ideal capital look like? Photographer Nick Hannes traveled to six countries – Egypt, Korea, Nigeria, Kazakhstan, Indonesia and Brazil – that have recently built a new capital or are in the process of doing so. Each and every one of them is a typical example of what Rem Koolhaas calls the Generic City: a planned city without historical layers, local identity, or its own character. As a visual sociologist with a sharp eye for detail, Hannes searches for the human dimension in a setting full of spectacular architecture and pompous prestige projects. "New Capital" is a critical reflection on unbridled neoliberal urban development and its social and ecological consequences, but is also peppered with subtle humor and surprising coincidences. Meandering between pride and sadness, "New Capital" shows how utopia and dystopia are sometimes surprisingly close.

Summary:
"Verdigris / Ambergris" completes a twelve-year suite of works by Paul Graham focused on life’s transience and our mortality. This pair of sibling books is centered on people scanning the infinite horizon as they look out over land (Verdigris) and sea (Ambergris). Interleaved with these contemplative portraits in the first volume are images of cherry blossoms and in the second images of the setting sun. These photographs are made respectively in a park overlooking post-industrial New Jersey, in which Graham has worked for the past seven years, and along the northern coast of Long Island, where there is a long tradition of watching the setting sun.
