Summary:
This book publishes for the first time a 1954 exhibit of photographs of Louis Sullivan buildings directed by Aaron Siskind at the Institute of Design. In 1952 Siskind and his advanced photography students undertook a comprehensive photographic survey of Sullivan's architecture and by early 1954 had photographed more than 60 Sullivan buildings. From hundreds of photographs Siskind composed an exhibit of 126 photographs of 35 Sullivan buildings, note-worthy for its startling juxtaposition of ornament details and carefully composed building portraits. Siskind's exhibit was a documentation of Sullivan's architecture unlike any other - and one that could never be repeated, because so many of Sullivan's buildings were demolished shortly thereafter.

Summary:
Photographer Rafael Goldchain's Polish-Jewish ancestors emigrated to South America in the 1930s, and many others perished in Poland during the Nazi regime. Also lost in the turmoil of war and emigration were most of the portraits of his extended family. When Goldchain became a parent himself, he decided to make up for this lack of evidence and recreate the lost generations of the past, in the present. Rafael Goldchain's "I am my family" is a family album of traditional portrait photographs with an unconventional twist: the only subject is Goldchain himself. In an elaborate process involving genealogical research, the use of makeup, hair styling, costume, and props, Goldchain transforms himself into his ancestors and captures their personifications with the camera. Taking some liberties with historical accuracy, Goldchain has assembled a fascinating cast of characters : from his short-story-writing grandfather, to his great-aunts Pola and Fela, to the Rabbi Gur's nephew in wedding dress, Goldchain reinvents himself over and over again. These beautifully reproduced self-portraits trace the evolution of Jewish culture from tradition to modernity and invite us to engage the history of a family decimated and scattered by the traumatic events of the 20th century. Featuring an essay by curator Martha Langford, the portraits are complemented by a selection of the archival images on which they are based as well as selections from the artist's handwritten sketchbooks.

Summary:
Over the past thirty years, Victor Burgin has become both an influential artist and a renowned theorist of the still and moving image. His writings are noted for their lucidity, while his photographs and videos are paradoxical and question meaning in contemporary society. In this book, Victor Burgin retraces the history of his artistic and critical pursuits, from his conceptual photographic works of the sixties to his recent video work. He reviews the evolution of his visual work with a particular focus on its relationship to the institution and practices of painting, photography and cinema. This book is different from Burgin’s previous publications, which are either monographs of his visual work—with essays by other writers—or collections of his essays. This is the first book in which Burgin turns his attention to his own artistic production.

Summary:
Since 2015, Wen-You Cai has returned on multiple occasions to her parents' hometown of Quanzhou, Fujian, to attend the funerals of her deceased relatives. The ceremonies in the Minnan region unfold like grand dramas in which she is both an observer and a participant. Throughout the ceremony, Wen-You is enveloped in the unknown; everything seems meticulously arranged. Amidst the overwhelming grief of losing loved ones, there exists a feeling of confusion, and taking photographs was one of the ways for her to engage in the funeral process. For this photo series, Wen-You was initially confronted by her own fear of death, intertwined with her bewilderment and curiosity about the complex funeral rituals and its uniqueness inherent to Minnan culture. To demystify these subjects, Wen-You, joined by te editions, interviewed a funeral director who provides comprehensive “one-stop services,” a monk who hosts Buddhist ceremonies, and a folklorist of Minnan rituals. Minnan Exit can be interpreted as many things–a family album, a curated collection of photographs, an unfinished journey of discovery, as well as the process of Wen-You's reconciliation with her mortality.

Summary:
The pond at Upton Pyne formed at the site of an eighteenth-century manganese mine. Located on land owned by a local family who were involved in the mining venture, the first excavations began in 1788. It was originally an open-cast mine employing just a few men who worked with ladders, picks, shovels. The quality of the ore in the lode was rich, and once refined it was shipped from Exeter Quay to London and Bristol where it was used predominantly in the production of glass. After a bright start the output of the mine steadily diminished and by 1823 it had ceased production, leaving a large pit, shallow on the east side near the road and becoming deeper towards the west, where it is overhung by a cliff...
