What is the future of the art museum? Should artists and critics have greater say in museum programming? What role can new museum technologies play in the future of the art museum? How should art museums address and correct past histories of predjudice and exclusion? Are art museums doomed to extinction? These pertinent questions and others are asked, discussed, and sometimes even answered in "Museums of tomorrow" - documentation of a two-week online conference on the role and future of art museums. Thirty scholars, artists, museum directors, and curators participated in the discussion which was moderated by curator and essayist Maurice Berger for the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum’s Research Center Website.

Whose muse? : art museums and the public trust

Summary:
During the economic boom of the 1990's, art museums expanded dramatically in size, scope, and ambition. They came to be seen as new civic centers : on the one hand as places of entertainment, leisure, and commerce, on the other as socially therapeutic institutions. But museums were also criticized for everything from elitism to looting or illegally exporting works from other countries, to exhibiting works offensive to the public taste. "Whose Muse?" brings together five directors of leading American and British art museums who together offer a forward-looking alternative to such prevailing views. While their approaches differ, certain themes recur : as museums have become increasingly complex and costly to manage, and as government support has waned, the temptation is great to follow policies driven not by a mission but by the market. However, the directors concur that public trust can be upheld only if museums continue to see their core mission as building collections that reflect a nation's artistic legacy and providing informed and unfettered access to them. The book, based on a lecture series of the same title held in 2000-2001 by the Harvard Program for Art Museum Directors, also includes an introduction by Cuno and a fascinating - and surprisingly frank - roundtable discussion among the participating directors. A rare collection of sustained reflections by prominent museum directors on the current state of affairs in their profession, this book is without equal. It will be read widely not only by museum professionals, trustees, critics, and scholars, but also by the art-loving public itself.

Summary:
"Museum Studies: An Anthology of Contexts" provides a comprehensive interdisciplinary collection of approaches to museums and their relation to history, culture, philosophy and their adoring or combative publics. This book brings together for the first time a wide array of texts that mix contemporary analysis with historical documentation. It includes five sections that highlight central themes in museum studies: issue-oriented contexts in museology; states of "nature"; the status of nations; history, memory and other locations; and arts, crafts and visitors. It also addresses the development of museums, the role of the museum in society, and issues central to contemporary museum studies opening with an introductory essay that situates museum studies in a truly interdisciplinary context and including an opening essay for each section that guides the reader through the selections. Finally, the anthology includes a bibliography and list of resources devoted to museum studies that makes the volume an authoritative guide on the subject.

For this site-specific work at Japan's National Art Museum in Osaka, Christian Philipp Müller tracked down 54 different types of chairs in use at the museum. He then presented them on a colorful, stair-step platform in chronological order by the date of design, and created a typology of usage. The book also includes photos of the chairs in use, product catalogs and storage conditions. A fine commentary on the current fetish of the chair as design object, and our nostalgia for these familiar shapes memorialized as high-class consumer goods. With contribitions by Christian Philipp Müller, Hiroyuki Nakanishi, Christian Witt-Döring and Bennett Simpson.

How long ago have you been to an exhibition or an event? What information and amusement you get from it? Did you enjoy it? We are thrilled to present you our latest title When Space Meets Art/When Art Meets Space which leads you to taste and feel all sorts of events comprehensively. An exhibition, a party or any kinds of event can encompass all design areas. For many of us who usually focus only on the exhibited items or the subject of events, few of us ever pay attention to the whole design environment. This title will guide you to look and feel it through two key components: spatial design and graphic elements. From 3D to 2D, it demonstrates how structural work including venue setups from exterior to interior makes the whole event outstanding and turn into exceptional eye-catching fascination and how graphic elements from venue decorations to promotional items makes consistency to reflect the whole event concept and affect the affiliation from the exhibited subjects to audience. By that, the title ultimately reveals how these objects affect your sense and blow up your impression to particular events.
