Summary:
Dependent on the extractive practices of fossil-fueled industrial capitalism, chemical photography’s emulsions and films were highly sensitive to polluted atmospheres, and photographic companies had to work hard to control this sensitivity. Drawing on histories of empire, coal, and chemistry and from the archives of British photographic manufacturer Ilford Limited, Michelle Henning exposes the ways photography shaped how we see and understand the atmosphere while leaving its toxic residues in the air, soil, and water. Structured as thirty-six short chapters and with over seventy illustrations, this innovative book begins in interwar London, follows the supply of Ilford products to photographers on the West African coast, and considers photography as a military technology linked to the development of chemical warfare. Combining close readings of photographs with discussions of low-light, tropical, and aerial photography, Henning examines the extraction and development of photographic materials, their role in the current environmental crisis, and how they have shaped experiences of time and the environment.

Summary:
'Sharing the Land' explores how human beings perceive, represent, and give meaning to nature – and how these processes continually shape one another. The practice of Sabina Timmermans spans drawing, painting, and spatial installation. It begins in the landscape, where she spends long periods experiencing its physical and sensory elements, which in the studio develop into large charcoal drawings, collages, and clay models. By extracting natural forms from their original context and rendering them as sculptural, bodily presences, her images take on the resemblance of living beings. The layered process of creation mirrors the slow rhythms of natural growth. 'Sharing the Land' combines artworks with photographs, field notes, and texts by guest writers Rebecca Nelemans and Norbert Peeters.

Summary:
For centuries the Spanish Empire’s conscripted laborers extracted silver from hand-dug tunnels and shafts deep beneath the mountain spine of the Americas. By the late nineteenth century, mining engineers in the United States and in Mexico were refining not just silver ores but also lead, gold, and copper. Copper was especially crucial to the looming industrial century. Not since the days when Spanish treasure galleons carried off the New World’s silver had anyone seen the sort of vast mineral wealth amassed by the “copper kings” of the Gilded Age. First among them was the Guggenheim family, whose American Smelting and Refining Company (ASARCO) controlled more than 80 percent of the world’s supply of silver, copper, and lead by the early twentieth century.

Summary:
"How to build a river," through photographs and incisive, contextualizing essays, ventures behind the construction hoardings of the Port Lands Flood Protection project to reveal the transformation of hundreds of acres of polluted brownfields into a new public park, a new river and a site for future housing. Awarded to photographers Vid Ingelevics and Ryan Walker in 2019, the commission resulted in an illuminating series of photographs that explore key themes and historical contexts of this legacy-building endeavour. Central to this project was the construction of a new wider, naturalized mouth for the Don River as well as a new public park on this former brownfield site. Additionally, the photographs explore the necessary demolition of many existing industrial buildings, the involvement of First Nations, the excavation of the new river valley and the complex bio-engineering techniques involved, archeological discoveries during the excavation, the re-naturalization of the site and, most recently, the opening of a significant section of Biidaasige Park to the public in July 2025.

Summary:
This exhibition catalogue highlights Girard’s deep engagement with the urban landscape, beginning with his early work in Vancouver, where he documented the city’s streets, neighbourhoods, and shifting social fabric in the 1970s and 1980s. His images from this period, collected in ''Under Vancouver'', 1972–1982 (2017), reveal a city in flux and a photographer attuned to both human presence and architectural change, offering an intimate yet expansive portrait of Vancouver’s history and culture. An early interest in Asia resulted in his living for decades in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shanghai where he captured these cities extraordinary and often tumultuous transformations at the end of the 20th century and into the 21st. His record of life in Hong Kong’s Kowloon Walled City in ''City of Darkness'' (1993, first edition; 1999, reprint) and in ''City of Darkness Revisited'' (2014, first edition; 2021, reprint) co-authored with Ian Lambot, have formed the basis for countless reimaginings of a dystopian/romantic, Asia-influenced, urbanized near future in film and video games. These images, along with the work in ''Phantom Shanghai'' (2007), illustrate the tension between memory and progress, the built environment and human experience, and have earned international acclaim.

Summary:
''Kami'' is a deeply personal and meditative project by Japanese photographer Hitoshi Fugo. Conceived across nearly three decades, the work explores the tension between destruction and transformation, between what is lost and what remains. The series juxtaposes two distinct bodies of images: photographs taken in the aftermath of the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake in Kobe, and close studies of a partially burned industrial paper roll that Fugo found outside a fire-ravaged printing factory in Tokyo. In both, he searches for unexpected beauty in the ruins, forms that have been stripped of their function, worn by time or trauma, yet still resonate with presence. The Japanese word ''kamo'' means both ''god'' and ''paper'' and this ambiguity forms the philosophical core of the work. In the face of natural disaster and human-made destruction, ''Kami'' reflects on the fragility of matter, the absence of divinity, and the possibility of poetic reconstruction through photographic seeing.

Summary:
"Paris 2024" brings together a series of photographs of historic monuments undergoing restoration. Covered with printed tarpaulins — displaying either monumental advertisements or photographic reproductions of the façades themselves — these buildings temporarily vanish beneath a fabricated version of reality. These urban trompe-l’œils form an ephemeral stage set that conceals the city’s construction work and transformations. The photographs play with this ambiguity, between cut stone and polyvinyl sheeting. They recount the history of Paris, from Haussmann’s grand renovations to today’s Grand Paris project, and reveal an urban system in constant flux — exposing, through these images, the invisible mechanisms that shape the city.
