Summary:
In 1958, the first edition of Robert Frank's The Americanswas published in Paris. Les Americains contained Frank's 83 photographs in the same sequence as all subsequent editions, with the image on the right hand page, but juxtaposed with historical texts about American society and politics, gathered by Alain Bosquet. The following year, in the first American edition, the French texts were removed and an introduction by Jack Kerouac was added. Over the subsequent 50 years, The Americans has been republished in many editions, in numerous languages, with a variety of cover designs, and even in a range of sizes. It is the most famous photography book ever published, and it changed the face of the medium forever. Robert Frank discussed with his publisher, Gerhard Steidl, the idea of producing a new edition using modernscanning and the finest tritone printing. The starting point was to bring original prints from New York to Gottingen, Germany, where Steidl is based. In July 2007, Frank visited Gottingen. A new format for the book was worked out and new typography selected. A new cover was designed and Frank chose the book cloth, foil for embossing, and the endpaper. Most significantly, as he has done for every edition of The Americans, Frank changed the cropping of many of the photographs, usually including more information. Two images were changed completely from the original 1958 and 1959 editions.

This title features photographs by one of French cinema's most influential and enigmatic artists.Any new film and any new book by French filmmaker Chris Marker is an event. Marker gave film lovers one of their most memorable experiences with "La Jetee" (1962) - a time-travel montage set after a nuclear war that inspired Terry Gilliam's "Twelve Monkeys" (1995). His still camerawork is not as well known, but Marker has been taking photographs as long as he has been making films. "Staring Back" presents 200 black-and-white photographs from Marker's personal archives, taken from 1952 to 2006. Some of the photographs are related to his classic films (which include "Le Jetee", "Sans Soleil", "Cuba Si!", and "The Case of the Grinning Cat"), others are portraits of famous faces (Simone Signoret, Akira Kurosawa), but most are pictures of people Marker has encountered as he has traveled the world (an extra who appeared in Kurosawa's "Ran", a woman seen on a street in Siberia). The central section of the book contains a series of photographs documenting political protests Marker has witnessed, including the march on the Pentagon in 1967, the events of May 1968 in Paris, and the tumultuous 2006 demonstrations protesting the French government's proposed employment policies.

Summary:
An unprecedented glimpse behind the scenes at the practice of Eero Saarinen, one of the greats of mid-century American architecture. Covers 1957 to 1961, the period when Saarinen was working on iconic projects like Dulles International Airpot Terminal, the former TWA Terminal at Kennedy Airport and the St. Louis Arch. Richard Knight, Saarinen's "house photographer", documents in black and white photographs and a personal memoir the excitement of being part of this unparalleled creative team. Timed to coincide with a touring Saarinen retrospective (beginning at the Cranbrook Institute in fall 2007 and traveling to Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Minneapolis, St. Louis, New York, and New Haven), the book includes a foreward on Saarinen's artistic vision and office culture by Cesar Pelli, who began his career in the architect's office, and an afterword by architectural historian Pierluigi Serraino on the significance of large-scale model-making in Saarinen's work.

Summary:
Ari Marcopoulos is best known for documenting boyish subcultures from the inside out. His work on professional snowboarding appears in Transitions and Exits and his photos on hip-hop--five years of images of the Beastie Boys--in Pass the Mic. Aaron Rose, who showed Marcopoulos at Alleged Gallery, has said of the artist's uncanny connection with one set of subjects, a crowd of New York skateboarders ten years his junior, "There was just something in his personality that said, 'Hey man, it's cool.'" It shows. Marcopoulos's self-taught snapshot style brings his subjects in close, and captures, without sentimentality or voyeurism, the intimate feeling of their daily life. Here he focuses on the subculture that is his own family. Even the President of the United States Sometimes Has Got to Stand Naked is a journal-like collection of images of the accidents and pleasures of "normal" life, full of the artist's loved ones, of landscapes and of American social reality.

Summary:
Karl Blossfeldt was a pioneer of botanical photography, though his interest in the plant world was initially educational. Fascinated by the structure of plants, whose seemingly artistic forms resulted from biological necessity, he realized that photography could be a useful teaching tool, allowing his students to see and compare natural forms. Working with a homemade camera, Blossfeldt gathered and photographed his own plant samples, magnifying them by up to 45 times. From around 1898 onward, he shot some 6,000 images, which he used primarily as visual aids in his classes. Eventually published as Art Forms in Nature (1928) and Art Forms in Nature, Second Series (1932), Blossfeldt’s photographs had a lasting impact on the art of his day and were enthusiastically embraced by both the Surrealist and New Objectivity movements. His books brought him overnight fame and are still considered landmarks in the history of art and photography. Karl Blossfeldt: Masterworks presents a remarkable collection of Blossfeldt’s strikingly austere yet poetic portraits of plants, which capture their timeless beauty in intimate detail.

Summary:
This book presents three independent bodies of work by Henry Wessel, each being a precise sequence arranged to give the viewer the experience of what it felt like to pass through the territory described. The first series “Traffic” shows Wessel’s photos of drivers stuck in traffic as he commuted in the early 1980s from Richmond, California, to San Francisco in the morning rush hour. Wessel records the determination, impatience and blank boredom of his fellow drivers as they navigate a daily drill that seems at times daunting and hopeless. “Sunset Park” is Wessel’s series of night photos of the modest working-class neighborhood of Sunset Park in Santa Monica. Over four years in the mid-1990s, Wessel captured the nocturnal transformation of suburbia into a strange, sometimes eerie, landscape. In his words: “You can’t help but notice how the world is reconfigured by the lights at night. The spot lighting of particular areas, the lack of ambient light, the unnatural way that shadows are cast, all take us to an unfamiliar place…” Wessel’s final series “Continental Divide” takes the viewer on a ride from the dense, suburban flatlands of the Midwest, up across the Rocky Mountains, and down into the sparse desert landscape of the American West. Wessel depicts its houses, shacks, street corners, and the highway, reminding us of the inherent aesthetics of the everyday.

At a moment when the world is facing the world’s largest refugee and migration crisis since the Second World War, Incoming by Irish artist and Deutsche Börse Photography Prize winner Richard Mosse deals with the major humanitarian and political plight of our time, the displacement of millions due to war, persecution and climate change. With illuminating texts by Mosse and the philosopher Giorgio Agamben, the 576-page book combines film stills from the artist’s latest video work made in collaboration with electronic composer Ben Frost and cinematographer Trevor Tweeten – a haunting and searing multi-channel film installation, accompanied by a visceral soundtrack. Journeys made by refugees and migrants across the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe are captured with a new weapons-grade surveillance technology that can detect the human body from 30.3km. Blind to skin colour, this camera technology registers only the contours of relative heat difference within a given scene, foregrounding the fragile human body’s struggle for survival in hostile environments.

Summary:
Why does a visual artist, as Austrian photographer Georg Salner, make a photographic ‘excursion’ to Le Corbusier (and Pierre Jeanneret) in Chandigarh and to Oscar Niemeyer in Brasília (Niterói and Rio de Janeiro)? Of all grandmasters, Le Corbusier and Niemeyer are the only ones to have infused entire capitals with their ideas and endowed them with key buildings. They were all ‘ideal types’ of designers: innovative, influential and motivated by a huge commitment to a world civilization whose – at times utopian – approaches were not always able to flourish in every sense. Indeed, they remained lone figures with many outstanding comrades in arms and successors.
