Summary:
Over the years Marianne Mueller has accumulated an archive of photographs taken both at home and on extended journeys. Completely nonhierarchical, the pictures capture whatever strikes the artist’s fancy. In STAIRS ETC, her archive has supplied the copious images of the designed and built world around us. Laid out in double-page blocks and organized by the simplest of categories (from chairs and tables to fountains and pools), the photographs emulate a pseudo-encyclopedic overview of ordinary objects captured with eloquent nonchalance and a discriminating eye for what we tend to write off as irrelevant and insignificant. Mueller invites us on a journey as absurdly comical as it is poetic, where we find ourselves meandering through the miracles and madness of a universe that is chock-full of things.

The publication cites Ed Ruscha’s iconic artist’s book ''Twentysix gasoline stations'' from 1963, and thus spans an arc from the automobile culture of the American Sixties to our own European present, questioning the direction in which we wish to shape this development. Summary:
The publication cites Ed Ruscha’s iconic artist’s book ''Twentysix gasoline stations'' from 1963, and thus spans an arc from the automobile culture of the American Sixties to our own European present, questioning the direction in which we wish to shape this development. A hairdresser, an Asian market, signs upon signs, curtains, and—behind these—apartments. At first glance, a street like any other, but something irritates. Finally, you realize that the images depict only vacancies. The buildings on Waldeggstrasse have been unoccupied for ten years, and it will be almost another ten years before the “gap” is closed to form an inner-city expressway axis. The images by the Austrian photo artist Otto Hainzl link the dramaturgy of social life with questions about urban development concepts.

Summary:
"Le premier homme" is a semi-fictional documentary that tells the story of a mysterious man called Mr. B. living as a hermit in nature. In fact, after spending an entire life working tirelessly trying to survive and a few years from retirement, Mr. B. abandoned everything to lead a simple and authentic life. This man, crushed by an increasingly inhuman and deleterious system, found refuge far from his fellow men and developed extraordinary abilities there. He's able to control the elements, communicate with animals and even levitate. By refusing to participate in the exploitation of nature and humans, by adopting a humble and responsible attitude, he's rising against the excesses of neoliberalism. It’s a sort of David’s fight against Goliath - a highly topical issue - that he embodies in his own way and will lead without compromise when he will feel ready to get back to – what is paradoxically called – civilization.

Summary:
Dusk, the transitional hour bridging day and night, symbolizes the border between conscious and unconscious, light and dark or life and death. Further, in ancient Japanese culture, dusk was considered to be the time when one might encounter dark creatures. The images of "At dusk" are to visualize inner reality of a person who has been through change in her life, moving from one culture to another. While it is a personal project, it has a possibility to be collective, triggering similar evocative effects in a viewer’s mind. The images exist somewhere between reality and fantasy, and those often somber images are inspired by the fragmented memories of my childhood, long discarded fears and vaguely recalled nightmares.

Summary:
Born in Kiev in 1917, at the start of the Russian Revolution, Maya Deren died forty-four years later in New York City. In her brief life, she established herself as a pioneering experimental filmmaker, prolific writer, accomplished photographer, and crusader for a personal and poetic cinema. Although Deren completed only six short films in her lifetime, her impact on the history of cinema is immeasurable. This is the first full biography of Deren. Based on years of research, interviews with some of Deren’s closest collaborators, and generously illustrated with film stills and photographs, author Mark Alice Durant creates a vivid and accessible narrative exploring the complexities and contradictions in the life and work of this remarkable and charismatic artist.

Summary:
Juan Hein has turned his fascination towards the realm of technology, mining the digital cloud instead of seeking clouds in the sky. He peers into a vast body of information and images, and captures and re-photographs what he finds most interesting. He chooses the motif, he enlarges it, crops it and digitally manipulates it. This process stretches the final image into something in between an almost classical etching, with strong sculptural aspects, and a deliberately pixelated digital meta-reality. By doing this, Hein points to the very origin of the picture – historically, technically and conceptually. In the age of fake news, the book is asking one simple question; is what you see true or false? Is it beauty or horror, a paraphrase of an illusive Chinese proverb or a meta-reality created by the mastermind. Hopefully the answer will remain in flux just as fluid and transient as the clouds themselves.
