Summary:
In southern France, high above the villas and the pleasure palaces of the Côte d’Azur, there is the Alpine Extension of the Maginot Line. These little-known fortifications were built before the Second World War to protect France from Mussolini. But nobody has successfully invaded over the Alps since Napoleon, and things didn’t quite turn out as the French expected. Now, the bunkers are marooned, forlorn and crumbling, in some of the most beautiful and remote parts of France. They are disappearing into the landscapes they once commanded, stray facts from a future passed, still waiting for an onslaught that never came.

Summary:
Orri Jónsson was holidaying one summer in the north of Iceland with his family, when he stumbled upon an abandoned farmhouse and began taking photos of it. Fascinated with the results but disappointed by the restrictions of the 35mm film he had used, he returned to the motif with a large-format analogue camera. Orri thus photographed the gloriously decaying interiors of deserted houses throughout Iceland for the next 12 years, and ''Interiors'' contains the best of these images from 1999 to 2010. Painterly in color, rigorous in composition and lacking people, Orri's photos evoke the personal histories of the inhabitants who long ago abandoned their homes. ''Interiors'' is shaped by an uncanny silence and sense of loss, most poignant in the images of objects people left behind--old buttons, newspapers and even a hot water bottle--tokens of vanished lives.

Set behind the grand houses of Georgian and Victorian London, intimately scaled mews originally served as accommodation for coaches and horses.?After the advent of the motorcar in the early twentieth century, these secluded courts and alleys began to be converted for residential use, favoured by artists and bohemians.?As they grew in popularity, mews also became popular as sites for new-build homes. Often these were of a radically experimental nature, challenging established notions of domesticity in the heart of the?historic city. ''At Home in London: The Mews House'' documents?seventeen examples of this rich tradition dating from the 1960s to the present day, with new photography and extensive drawings.?The self-built houses of architects feature particularly prominently,?including those of John Winter, Ted and Roz Cullinan, and Peter St John and Siw Thomas.?Acclaimed architecture critic Ellis Woodman narrates the history of this perennially popular type from its early pioneers including potter Lucie Rie through the potential of the mews as a model for new residential development, exemplified by Peter Barber’s monumental Edgewood Mews (2022) and Al-Jawad Pike’s?Chowdhury Walk (2023).

Summary:
Since 2015, Wen-You Cai has returned on multiple occasions to her parents' hometown of Quanzhou, Fujian, to attend the funerals of her deceased relatives. The ceremonies in the Minnan region unfold like grand dramas in which she is both an observer and a participant. Throughout the ceremony, Wen-You is enveloped in the unknown; everything seems meticulously arranged. Amidst the overwhelming grief of losing loved ones, there exists a feeling of confusion, and taking photographs was one of the ways for her to engage in the funeral process. For this photo series, Wen-You was initially confronted by her own fear of death, intertwined with her bewilderment and curiosity about the complex funeral rituals and its uniqueness inherent to Minnan culture. To demystify these subjects, Wen-You, joined by te editions, interviewed a funeral director who provides comprehensive “one-stop services,” a monk who hosts Buddhist ceremonies, and a folklorist of Minnan rituals. Minnan Exit can be interpreted as many things–a family album, a curated collection of photographs, an unfinished journey of discovery, as well as the process of Wen-You's reconciliation with her mortality.

The pond at Upton Pyne formed at the site of an eighteenth-century manganese mine. Located on land owned by a local family who were involved in the mining venture, the first excavations began in 1788. It was originally an open-cast mine employing just a few men who worked with ladders, picks, shovels. The quality of the ore in the lode was rich, and once refined it was shipped from Exeter Quay to London and Bristol where it was used predominantly in the production of glass. After a bright start the output of the mine steadily diminished and by 1823 it had ceased production, leaving a large pit, shallow on the east side near the road and becoming deeper towards the west, where it is overhung by a cliff...

Summary:
Based on the photographs and writings of his great-grandfather, photographer and video artist Andréas Lang embarks on a search for traces and research into a lost chapter of German colonial history in Central Africa: a frontier expedition to take possession of the territory of French Congo. His photographs and videos depict places and landscapes in which the phantoms of the colonial era are still present, in a state of limbo between reality and fiction, past and present. He contrasts this with previously unpublished historical material that reflects the bleak reality of colonialism.

Summary:
Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of his medium, Robert Frank broke new ground with his candid, poignant images of American life in the mid-20th century. Published on the occasion of the exhibition at Pace in New York, and in celebration of the centennial of Frank’s birth, "Robert Frank: Hope makes visions" presents an in-depth look at the photographer and filmmaker’s process across various media. Through a selection of his lesser-known photographs, collages, sketches and maquettes from 1955 to 2016, a new portrait of the artist emerges, one that shows his commitment to growth and experimentation throughout his career. With a new text by Ocean Vuong, author of the award-winning "On Earth we're briefly gorgeous" (2019), this volume is a sensitive homage to a canonical artist.

Summary:
In November 2022, the water level of the Great Salt Lake fell to its lowest on record. Diverted water supply from its feeding rivers, pollution from nearby extraction plants and ravaging droughts have brought this landmark to a crisis point. As the lake reached its lowest ebb, photographer Fazal Sheikh (born 1965), together with writer Terry Tempest Williams (born 1955), walked the shoreline, awed by its epic beauty while recording the destruction of its natural habitats. As Utah native Williams writes in her essay, "Retreat," she is witnessing the death of a lake that has been a constant presence in her life. Meanwhile, Sheikh documents the shrinking salt basin from above, revealing how the lake has been exploited: plundered for its natural salts, dissected by concrete highways, discolored by toxic waste, depleted by evaporation. His images hold a mirror to the lake’s surface, charting its destruction while demanding the viewer’s visceral response.
