Summary:

Summary:
Known until recently for such public facilities as the Zamora Municipal Museum, the Castellón Fine Arts Museum and the León Auditorium, over the last few years Mansilla + Tuñón have developed a number of projects in which urban scale and the problems of inhabiting in the contemporary city assume more and more importance. In this issue of 2G we present the (almost) complete works of these Madrid architects, works grouped around the basic ideas which define their projects, namely memory and the city, system and restrictions, sameness and difference, and lastly trace and landscape. These concepts are not watertight entities, however, but are present in each and every one of their designs as intersecting references, and they enable us to dissect the architects' way of thinking and influencing reality. Similarly, the articles accompanying the presentation of their buildings scrutinise in kaleidoscopic form the modus operandi of their work.

Summary:
The previous issue of "Quaderns" dealt with urban dysfunction or, rather, with the dysfunctionality of the suburban model and of the elements attendant on this dysfunctionality: the increase in mobility based on private transport, the appearance of shopping and leisure centres linked to road networks, the development of a mortgage system geared towards the purchase of the family home, and the social and environmental consequences of the extension across the territory of low-density urban sprawl. This issue sets out to address the opposite pole of dysfunctionality. On the basis of the paradox established by the images of scenes one and two, it aims to draw out an itinerary that takes in various places where the urban phenomenon approaches a degree of paroxysm. It explores situations that are brought about in very specific contexts of the city and that respond to the idea of the hyperurban, of the urban taken to the extreme of its spatial and signic saturation: city-centre districts, busy markets, plots so tiny as to be almost non-existent, the marginal occupation of residual spaces in the centre which are too small to be of any interest to the speculators... In short, a whole series of situations with conditions of density, concentration and intensity of use that are well in excess of the levels usually found in the urban fabric. It is between the suburban unconscious and hyperurban over-reality that the most plausible forms of a possible city are likely to be found.

Summary:
The development of the countryside has generally been conceived of from an urban perspective: the country as producer of food for the urban population, as development area, or as recreational area. Even the development and protection of nature in the countryside are undertaken in service of city dwellers, so that they can experience scenic beauty as a compensation for the pernicious urban life. Oase #63 questions existing approaches which view the countryside as the empty or "negative" part of the contemporary urban condition, and consequently reduce the countryside to what remains after the positive urban shape has been thought or carved out. Here the perspective is reversed: neither the city nor urbanization but rather the countryside and the agrarian industry constitute the starting point of this study. Thus "Oase #63" asks: Is it be possible to consider an alternative future for the countryside based on its intrinsic qualities? To what degree is the countryside capable of absorbing contemporary practices and processes? Does the countryside count at all as a bearer of political economy?
