Summary:
The Marburg Building System has been one of the earliest, and is probably one of the internationally best known German building systems. Originally developed by Helmut Spieker for a diploma thesis on university construction at the University of Kiel, and modified for the expansion of the University of Karlsruhe, the construction system was for the first time fully realized in 1961/1962 on the Marburg Lahn Hills. It marks the beginning of a construction boom doubling the building stock of German universities. This publication aims at bringing the building system back to the attention of experts and fans of good architecture. The topic is all the more up-to-date as the University of Marburg was recently declared a building of historic interest and thus protected by built heritage conservation.

Summary:
Toward the end of 1964, the Verrazano Narrows Bridge-linking the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Staten Island-was completed. Fifty years later, it remains an engineering marvel. At 13,700 feet (more than two and a half miles), it is still the longest suspension bridge in the United States and the sixth longest in the world. Gay Talese, then early in his career at the New York Times, closely followed the construction, and soon after the opening of this marvel of human ingenuity and engineering, he chronicled the human drama of its completion -from the construction workers high on the beams to the backroom dealing that displaced whole neighborhoods to make way for the bridge.

Summary:
Façades determine the appearance of a building. Hence, they constitute a major element in architecture. At the same time, the building’s envelope has important functions to fulfil, such as lighting, weatherproofing, thermal insulation, load transfer and sound insulation. Over the past 15 years, façades have become increasingly complex – ‘intelligent’ facades, for instance, adapt to changing climate and lighting conditions. Newly developed materials and technologies have broadened the scope of façade functions. This book demonstrates the principles of façade construction. It systematically describes the most common types, such as post-and-beam façade, curtain wall, corridor façade or double façade, and provides guidelines for appropriate detailing. Numerous drawings made especially for the book explain the principles of different types of facades, which are then illustrated with built examples. For this second edition, all chapters were revised and all four examples in the case studies chapter were replaced by new material. The new chapter “Future Façades” offers insights into what’s next.

Summary:
GUNITE OVER?

Summary:
The book introduces water as a building material to build unique, responsive-able structures and define a new paradigm for architecture and sustainable design. Architecture is based upon the misconception that strong is stable, both in sense of energy and structure, as an unchanged state of microclimate would require more material or insulation.Trans-structures are the opposite: building elements with the response-ability to change according to external conditions in order to maintain stability in terms of structure and/or energy. In this type of building, any effect (structural or thermal load) would generate an immediate affect (a response of the structure). Energy and weight would be counteracted and on a total scale, change would not occur. Such buildings are always in transition from one state to another, unlike conventional structures.
