Summary:
If postmodernism is indeed ''the cultural logic of late capitalism,'' why did typical postmodernist themes like ornament, colour, history and identity find their application in the architecture of the socialist Second World? How do we explain the retreat into paper architecture and theoretical discussion in societies still nominally devoted to socialist modernization? Exploring the intersection of two areas of growing scholarly interest - postmodernism and the architecture of the former socialist world - this edited collection stakes out new ground in charting architecture's various transformations in the 1970s and 80s. Fourteen essays together explore the question of whether or not architectural postmodernism had a specific Second World variant.

Summary:
Architect and philosopher Hélène Frichot examines how the discipline of architecture is theorized and practiced at the periphery. Eschewing a conventionally direct approach to architectural objects – to iconic buildings and big-name architects – she instead explores the background of architectural practice, to introduce the creative ecologies in which architecture exists only in relation to other objects and ideas. This book is concerned with 'other ways of doing architecture'. It examines architecture at the limits where it is muddied by alternative disciplinary influences – whether art practice, philosophy or literature. Frichot meets a range of creative characters who work at the peripheries, and who challenge the central assumptions of the discipline, showing that there is no 'core of architecture' – there is rather architecture as a multiplicity of diverse concerns in engagement with local environments and worlds.

Summary:
Through interdisciplinary approaches, this series explores and connects the changing realities of rural landscapes and communities around the world. Tucked inside the covers of this slim volume is a conversation—a chorus, a round. It takes place between the contributions, across a territory of blacktop, botany, and biography. It is as much a call and response between the writers and you, dear reader, as it is between what lays before us on that open road and what lies behind in the dust. In these pages we find ourselves caught between the ambiguous future of the title and—not the past—the artifacts of memory. This is the indefinite space of the future, the rural, and the archive.

When buildings are deemed ugly, what are the consequences? In ''Ugliness and Judgment,'' Timothy Hyde considers the role of aesthetic judgment and its concern for uglines in architectural debates and their resulting social effects across three centuries of British architectural history. From eighteenth-century ideas about Stonehenge to Prince Charles' opinions about the National Gallery, Hyde uncovers a new story of aesthetic judgment, where arguments about architectural ugliness do not pertain solely to buildings or assessments of style, but intrude into other spheres of civil society.
