Beyond the book, on screens and in spaces being invented, we are seeing the re-casting of roles between people creating and people receiving historical narratives. The six studies brought together in this volume are intended to shed light on the role played by the design of graphic, publishing and museographical systems in the way knowledge is produced and passed on. This involves highlighting the challenges of design and questioning the place of signs, images and texts in these systems of transmission.

Summary:
In this book, synthetic biologists, artists, designers, and social scientists investigate synthetic biology and design. After chapters that introduce the science and set the terms of the discussion, the book follows six boundary-crossing collaborations between artists and designers and synthetic biologists from around the world, helping us understand what it might mean to 'design nature.' These collaborations have resulted in biological computers that calculate form; speculative packaging that builds its own contents; algae that feeds on circuit boards; and a sampling of human cheeses.

This book is not a dictionary, though it tells you all you need know about everything from Authenticity to Zips. It's not an autobiography, though it does offer a revealing and highly personal inside view of contemporary culture. It's an essential tool kit for understanding the world around us. It's about what makes a Warhol a genuine fake; the creation of national identities; the mania to collect. It's also about the city as seen from the rear view mirror of Grand Theft Auto V; digital ornament and why we value imperfection. It's about drinking a bruisingly dry martini in Adolf Loo's American bar in Vienna, and about Hitchcock's film sets. It's about the modern world of fashion, technology, design and art.

Beautiful Users explores the changing relationship between designers and users and considers a range of design methodologies and practices, from user research to hacking, open source, and the maker culture.

Summary:
One of the seminal texts of graphic design, Paul Rand's Thoughts on Design is now back in print for the first time since the 1970s. Writing at the height of his career, Rand articulated in his slender volume the pioneering vision that all design should seamlessly integrate form and function. This facsimile edition preserves Rand's original 1947 essay with the adjustments he made to its text and imagery for a revised printing in 1970, and adds only an informative and inspiring new foreword by design luminary Michael Bierut. As relevant today as it was when first published, this classic treatise is an indispensable addition to the library of every designer.

Conceived by Atelier Hoko, this booklet approaches uncovering implicit conditions that exist in our experience of the everyday. The term “secondary” refers to material and immaterial conditions and sensations that humans are not conscious of in their interaction with things and the immediate surroundings. In so doing, the independent research lab hopes to draw upon a renewed sensibility towards living. This instalment analyses the act of drinking from a cup in exceeding detail, through photos, diagrams and texts. Atelier Hoko developed this programme in response to questions on how design today can move beyond its perceived perimeters.
