Summary:
Wood has a centuries-long tradition as well as a huge potential for future use as a highly versatile building material. ''Crafting wood'' presents newly gained knowledge on timber construction and on timber joints in particular. This book—illustrated with plans, sketches, and photographs—emerged from an international educational cooperation of the University of Liechtenstein in Vaduz, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology NTNU in Trondheim, and the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam. The program looked at a vast range of timber joints from different theoretical and practical perspectives. Students conceived and made by hand new joints that were then applied in prototypes for entire structures, also designed as part of the course, at a scale of 1:5. By analyzing this learning process, the book provides a new overview of the topic of timber joints in architecture through text and images.

Summary:
The worldwide booming timber construction sector and its rapid development beyond the limits of high-rise buildings demands high-performance materials, which are made possible by hardwood. Innovative production methods and manufacturing processes create economically competitive products that open up completely new possibilities for the construction sector - thanks to an almost forgotten building material. For it was not without reason that construction sector used predominantly hardwood until the 18th century. “Building with hardwood” focuses on its use in the supporting structure. The publication provides specialist knowledge for the safe handling of hardwood in building construction and shows successful examples of architecture from practice for practice.

Summary:
Thanks to high-performance composite structures made of wood and steel or concrete, wooden buildings are now being erected far beyond the high-rise boundaries. An end to the increase in altitude is hardly in sight. Wooden constructions are also on the uptrend in residential and office construction, sports halls, industrial buildings and bridges. They are the epitome of sustainable building and, thanks to new prefabrication processes, are also competitive in terms of construction costs. The book shows the current development of structural planning with wood on the basis of around 20 outstanding engineering structures. The engineers involved in the planning describe the conception of the supporting structures as well as individual solutions for their implementation. Technical articles from research and technology round out the book.

Summary:
"New standards" examines the conditions that affect standard, industrial, and manufactured buildings by revisiting a forgotten chapter of wood construction in post-war Finland. Puutalo Oy (Timber Houses Ltd.) was established in 1940 as part of Finland’s response to the war refugee crisis. The company quickly became one of the largest manufacturers of prefabricated wooden buildings – tens of thousands were shipped from Finland to every inhabited continent, constructing a largely overlooked legacy of housing and urbanisation. A new perspective on this legacy is given through careful analysis of these buildings and projects as they emerged from a rapidly changing political landscape.

French journalist Michèle Leloup together with architect François Leclercq—a pioneer of timber construction in France—have for a long time explored the ecological, economic, industrial, and technical challenges of using timber for major structures and urban architecture. This book summarizes their findings using examples from the French forestry and construction industry. It also takes a look at Austria and the innovative work by Hermann Kaufmann, an internationally revered leader in the further development of traditional timber architecture. In addition, the book features five projects by Leclercq Associés. Richly and attractively illustrated with new images by French architecture photographer Cyrille Weiner, the book offers a concise survey of topical questions and findings in contemporary timber construction.

Summary:
The material timber has become particularly important for architecture in the light of the climate crisis and the search for environmentally friendly resources. This book describes the potentials of the building material timber in terms of design and construction by means of 30 constructions of various sizes and usages. The spectrum encompasses a small mountain hut, residential or school buildings, large office buildings and institutions for culture and leisure. The respective building method – solid timber construction, modular construction, heavy framing, light framing or hybrid construction – is presented by means of plans and detailed design drawings. The holistic solution approaches of the 30 architectures demonstrate the potential of timber as a sustainable building material for a climate-friendly future.

Summary:
Natural, renewable, reusable, and aesthetically pleasing, wood is the consummate building material. Thanks to incredible advances in both application and sustainability, it is being used across the world to create new and surprising styles. This global survey features exquisite photography that captures a wide range of twenty-first century construction in residential, public, cultural, educational, commercial, and entertainment-related spaces. From the Mount Fuji World Heritage Center in Shizuoka, Japan and the Eystur Town Hall in the Faroe Islands to the College of Forestry at Oregon State University, each building is featured in double-page spreads with colour photographs that allow readers to appreciate timber’s intrinsic qualities against a variety of backgrounds, scales, and typologies. Plans and building specifications are accompanied by the latest developments in research and design. Eco-friendly and robust, timber’s applications are almost unlimited, extending to the tallest skyscrapers, and to every livable corner of our planet. This volume offers encouraging proof that architects around the world are responding to the climate crisis in ways that not only preserve the earth, but also provide pleasing environments in which to live, work, and play.
