Summary:
In times where global matters such as the climate, currencies and places of residence become increasingly volatile, the urban public space we live in is an area where power, identity and belonging are negotiated. Cities have always been melting pots of history, society, art and politics, which is why the way a city is shaped tells us a lot about the people who live in it. With contributors from a variety of fields, Ethics of the Urban discusses these urban spaces of the political. "How do we move about the city?", "How does memory of the past inspire the future of cities?" and "What makes a city a home?" are only some of the many questions that Ethics of the Urban addresses. The publication gathers experts from history, sociology, art, political theory, planning, law and design to emphasize the complexity of the meaning that urban space has today. Urban spaces are on one hand political spaces, since buildings, streets and people moving around all mirror political decisions in one way or another. On the other hand, the urban space is also a designed space, conceptualized, planned and sometimes gentrified. Complimented by stunning photography, Ethics of the Urban is a vibrant intellectual journey straight into the bone marrow of every contemporary city around the globe.

Summary:
What is a city? What determines its specificity? What shapes its quality? The evolution of the contemporary city does not follow a linear movement. It is shaped by transformation processes that are directed toward often distant and conflicting goals. Even though cities are inscribed into global processes and networks, they develop their own specific ways of dealing with these conditions. They tend to produce and reproduce their own specificity, their own patterns and character traits. Using the categories of territory, power, and difference—also lending the book its structure—the texts analyze different case studies of cities and urbanized territories, ranging from the Canary Islands to Hong Kong and Nairobi, unfolding the distinctiveness of their physical and social existences.

Summary:
With more than half of humanity living in cities, public places have become important regulators of planetary cohabitation. But rapid and uncontrolled urbanization or the urban decay of cities in times of economic crisis can jeopardize crucial aspects of this cohabitation such as community feeling, public life or social cohesion. In this context, Public Space Acupuncture has crystallized as a set of alternative urban strategies based on coordinated catalytic interventions with the aim of activating the use of public space and balancing or revitalizing urban life. The book analyzes the key factors in these innovative strategies, including citizen participation and short-term and flexible processes developed through a wide variety of temporary, low-cost, mutating, nomadic or artistic interventions.

Summary:
In recent years, Brazil has discovered vast quantities of petroleum deep within its territorial waters, inciting the construction of a series of cities along its coast and in the ocean. We could term these developments as Petropolises, or cities formed from resource extraction. The Petropolis of Tomorrow is a design and research project, originally undertaken at Rice University that examines the relationship between resource extraction and urban development in order to extract new templates for sustainable urbanism. Organized into three sections: Archipelago Urbanism, Harvesting Urbanism, and Logistical Urbanism, which consist of theoretical, technical, and photo articles as well as design proposals, The Petropolis of Tomorrow elucidates not only a vision for water-based urbanism of the floating frontier city, it also speculates on new methodologies for integrating infrastructure, landscape, urbanism and architecture within the larger spheres of economics, politics, and culture that implicate these disciplines.
