Summary:
A sense of harmony and proportion has traditionally been achieved in architectural compositions by using the dimensions of the human body as the starting point. Modern technology now enables us to go beyond these physical dimensions into a virtual world, and this poses a challenge to architecture as we usually perceive it. Interactive, flexible and intelligent models are being called for. Whilst technology is taking us into the realms of virtual reality, architecture on the other hand, is becoming more corporeal. "Postorganic" is the term being used to express this merging of the body and architecture brought about by electronic media. A radical change in perspective is blurring the distinction between the organic and mechanic, and the artificial logic of the computer and the natural logic of man are fusing together.

Summary:
In "The Freedom of the Architect", Pritzker Prize-winning architect Rafael Moneo speaks on form, language and history, broadly, and as represented in examples of his own work. He elaborates on how architects today have disassociated their work from the environment, creating autonomous landmarks with little relationship to their surroundings and how the architect as individual challenges the role of history in the built environment. Moneo’s reflections on his own work include: The City Hall of Murcia, Spain, The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Kursaal Auditorium in San Sebastian, Spain, and the acclaimed Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral in Los Angeles. Spanish born, Madrid-based Moneo’s work unites tradition and innovation. He has developed an extensive body of work as an architectural critic and theoretician and his writing has appeared in "Oppositions" and "Lotus". He is a committed educator, having chaired the Harvard Graduate School of Design and lectured internationally.

Summary:
For fifteen years, three architects—James Cathcart, Frank Fantauzzi, and Terence van Elslander—from three different cities have held an ongoing collaboration, creating installations and other works of innovation and art about the act of building. Pamphlet Architecture 25: Gravity catalogs a cross section of their many works, from the portable toilets installed in the facade of New York's StoreFront for Art and Architecture to "Big Orbits," a giant solid and a giant void constructed from 4600 shipping palettes. Although strongly conceptual, their work reminds us that a primary function of architecture is to engage the public.

"PA 24 : some among them are killers" explores unmanaged landscapes, territories that the author calls "wildernesses." These emerge from the cracks of mapping the spaces, at a variety of scales, that literally reside in the margins of error of our abilities to measure and calibrate space. From Yosemite National Park to the ubiquitous one-gallon milk jug, architect David Ross depicts the relationships between architecture and miscalibration and explores the spatial, tactile, and political ramifications of our reliance on modern devices of precision and overdetermination.

Summary:
"Hyperbodies" are buildings and environments which can continuously change shape and content. The mutations of such buildings depend on the input coming from their user as well as from the surroundings. This interaction between user and building is determined by a data flow which the hyperbody uses and converts into a ”hypersurface” structure, which then alters our perception of space in and around the hyperbody. The architect programs this interaction and can thereby define the specific character of the building. In this book, the author provides a concise overview of this latest digital tool.
