Summary:

Summary:
The city of Graz in Steiermark, Austria, has been chosen as cultural capital of Europe for 2003. On this occasion, a number of significant architectural projects, art installations and events have been planned in the city. This exhibition at the Aedes West gallery in Berlin focuses on two of the major and most radical architectural projects: the new museum of Modern Art, which was the object of an international design competition won by the London architects Peter Cook and Colin Fournier, and the Stadthalle designed by the Graz architect Klaus Kada. The Kunsthaus is currently under construction and will open on the 23rd of September 2003. The Stadthalle opened on the 6th of October 2002. These two projects make an unusual pair in that they are in complete contrast not only in terms of programme and but mostly in terms of their design philosophy: the Kunsthaus is a biomorphic project conceived as a smooth bulbous volume of continuous double curved surfaces, while the Stadthalle is distinguished by a slender roof cantilevered high above the street. The playful aesthetic tension between these two extreme designs, at this interesting and provocative point in history when the architectural envelope is being pushed in many contradictory directions, provides the dominant conceptual and visual theme of the exhibition, which also offers an overview of some of the other key design projects recently completed in the city.

Summary:
Information technology has brought about a radical change in architectural design. The sketches and plans of yesterday have been transformed by CAD. In this book the authors cast a glance behind the scenes to provide a systematic overview of the tools and technical processes which are now an integral part of today´s design methods. The most important digital tools are presented, the principal steps are analysed, and the essential concepts are explained. The theoretical information is vividly illustrated by a selection of examples from the world of architecture. A concise and accessible introduction to electronic designing, this book makes the subject easily comprehensible to all who are new to the field, and for those who already involved in digital designing it is a useful recapitulation and orientation.

Summary:
The changes which Information Technology has brought to all areas of our lives have been dramatic. Even in architecture it´s influence has been far-reaching, creating new processes opening up exciting new prospects. In this book, Peter Eisenman, Derrick de Kerckhove, and Antonino Saggio write boldly on the challenges which now face young architects. The IT Revolution offers opportunities which were previously undreamt of, but at the same time, danger lurks in the realm of virtuality with its implication of unlimited possibilities. Furio Barzon uses examples from contemporary architecture to underscore the three text contributions and also places them in the context of state of the art technology and future developments.

Summary:
Since the famous competition for the Park La Villette in Paris where the participants included Bernard Tschumi, Peter Eisenman and Gilles Deleuze, the relationship between building and landscape has been dramatically transformed. Concepts such as metamorphosis and interaction, layers and fields are becoming as much a part of architectonic discourse as the practical designs and the realization. Author Paola Gregory examines this interplay between buildings and landscapes present in today´s architecture scene, illustrating her analysis with exciting examples including the ecological landscapes of James Wines and Greg Lynn, the virtual environments of Marcos Novak and Nox, buildings by Jean Nouvel and Toyo Ito which actively incorporate passers-by and surroundings by means of new media.
