Summary:
The Hans van Heeswijk architecture firm was founded in Amsterdam in 1985, and it has designed and realized a great variety of projects, among them offices, public buildings, museums, bridges, renovations, refurbishments, interiors and product design. Those projects are without exception matchlessly lucid and crafted to a standard rarely seen, particularly in an economy where tight budgets are the rule. Their forms, reticent at first, become articulate at close range. Each encounter with them seems right--thus the aura of tranquility, typical for buildings composed with great care and attention. This monograph deals with the works and ideas of Hans van Heeswijk architects over the last decade, including the recent commission for the refurbishment of the Hermitage Museum in Amsterdam.

Summary:
This book from The Architecture Observer (Dutch architecture critic Hans Ibelings) takes readers through some of the unexpected twists and turns in the mind of the Toronto-based Romanian architect and urbanist Adrian Phiffer. It can be seen as an attempt to produce architecture with images and words – a non-linear flow of images interrupted by text, and vice versa. Its point of view is that of a youngish architect, and at times the book takes the form of a distorted self-portrait. He writes, “The cruelty of our profession is that we always have to imagine something special… we are required to make something sophisticated, slightly complex, preferably very expensive.”

Summary:
In the Netherlands, for decades a bastion of modernism, neomodernism and supermodernism, a contemporary traditionalism has been causing a stir since the 1990s. Instead of innovation, today's traditionalists tap into what is already there, drawing from the past and preferring means that have already proved their worth. In Hans Ibelings's book contemporary traditionalism, stripped of all populistic and moralistic arguments for and against, is analysed from different angles. Ibelings places contemporary traditionalism in an international and historical perspective. In so doing, the book answers the question of what contemporary traditionalism has to offer a 21st-century society.
