Summary:
A new world is emerging in China, with urbanization and the wholesale globalization of daily life moving at unprecedented speed. The Communist Party line has been replaced by maxims about working together to build a modern, economically resilient country. Cities are being rigorously adapted to fit this new vision, with disastrous consequences for existing structures and neighborhoods. Social and societal balances have been swiftly, radically altered. Can Chinese identity survive in a consumer society and a radically transformed urban environment, both conceived on a Western model? This first interdisciplinary overview of the country’s contemporary arts, architecture, urban planning and visual culture--including television, photography, newspapers, games and blogs - offers the work of some 20 Chinese artists considering these issues, and projects by some 10 Chinese architectural firms. "China contemporary" finds that a mix of long standing tradition, decades of Communism and hurriedly translated Western capitalism have resulted in an exciting visual and formal idiom.

Summary:
Since the introduction of the personal computer in the early 1980s, many objects have been designed to have capabilities well beyond their immediate use or appearance. Whether openly and actively or in subtle, subliminal ways, these objects talk to us, and we have come to expect interaction with them. Contemporary designers, besides giving objects form and function, write their initial scripts--the foundation for useful and satisfying conversations. This publication focuses on projects that involve such direct interaction--including interfaces, websites, video games, devices and tools, and information systems--as well as installations that establish practical, emotional, or even sensual connections to cities, companies, governmental institutions, or other individuals. The featured objects range in date from the late 1980s to today, with particular attention given to the last five years and projects currently in development. Organized thematically, it introduces design practices that are increasingly crucial to our world and demonstrates how rich and deep the influence of design will be on our future.

Summary:
Tell Me What You Want, What You Really, Really Want brings together a selection of recent writings by art critic Jan Verwoert for the first time. Published in collaboration with Piet Zwart Institute, Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, the book galvanizes central themes Verwoert has been developing in pursuit of a language to describes art’s transformative potential in conceptual, performative, and emotional terms. He analyzes the power of public gestures to constitute communities as well as the pressure to perform that governs the sphere of creative labor, in order to show how particular artists perform gestures and invoke community differently. Exploring the emotional power games that shape social relations, Verwoert looks for an alternative ethos of action and feeling, asking: How can a modernist approach to artistic form as a means of social critique be expanded to fully avow its subliminal affective undercurrents, and produce a pleasurably crooked form of criticality in art and writing?

Summary:
"Perspecta 34" explores the temporary relationship between architecture and the larger contexts within which social crisis and cultural transformation take place. The issue examines many questions associated with modernism, including the limits of utopian urban planning, and considers alternatives to space as the dominant organizing concept for architecture. It views the contemporary as a fluid practice in which games, intuition, collective imagination, and style emerge alongside conventional architectural approaches as ways to comprehend and shape the temporary landscape. Case studies--on the Olympics, Belgrade protests, refugee housing--ask how temporary events intensify the possibilities and limitations for architectural innovation. Perspecta 34 also explores the built environment as an ecology of change consisting of dynamic economies, movements of people, and overlapping systems of authority. The issue includes a portfolio of twentieth-century temporary projects that reflect changing ideas of fabrication, the deployment of the architectural object, and architecture's relationship to social and cultural practices.
