Summary:
Just Above Midtown (or JAM) was a New York art gallery and self-described laboratory for experimentation established in 1974 by Linda Goode Bryant with the intention of presenting African American artists “on the same platform with other established artists.” A hub for conceptual art, abstraction, performance, and video, JAM was a Black space open to artists of different races, generations, and educational backgrounds. The gallery, which was open until 1986, cultivated debate and prioritized process, collaboration, and the needs of artists over the demands of the art market. Published in conjunction with a path-making exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, this richly illustrated catalogue provides the most complete account to date of the gallery’s history, with an emphasis on rarely seen artworks, archival materials, and the recollections of those who were there.

The show takes the viewer on a journey through which affect, evocation, empathy, synesthesia, the unconscious and sensual perception live together, providing a context for both reflection and engagement. Beyond the physical presence of the artworks, the exhibition explores subtle themes such as transcendence, and the ways in which an artwork can be both immanent and starkly present, while engaging with conceptual or political undercurrents. Contributors include Melissa Bennett, Jennifer Fisher and Jim Drobnick, and Gabrielle Moser.

Summary:
This is the first book to approach Russian avant-garde art from the perspective of the anti-art canons associated with the international Dada movement. The works described and documented in Russian Dada were produced at the height of Dada's flourishing, between World War I and the death of Vladimir Lenin—who, incidentally, was a frequent visitor to Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich, the founding site of Dada. Like the Dadaists, the Russian avant-gardists whose works appear in this volume strove for internationalism, fused the verbal and visual, and engaged in eccentric practices and pacifist actions, including outrageous performances and anti-war campaigns. ''Russian Dada'', which accompanies a major exhibition at the Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid, includes 250 images and essays by leading art historians.
