AP207.S1.1987.PR01
Description:
The project series documents "Paesaggi Della Memoria", an installation presented at the Castello Aragonese, in Otranto in 1987. The installation consists of a small mound of sand on which is placed a plastic open suitcase and plastic cuttings that represent the mountains from Pettena's childhood landscape. This work by Pettena is a "metaphor for any possible personal interpretation of the universal theme of the landscape, bestow on it an artistic significance, the charge carried by the values of poetry, of the memory of a space and a time that here also acquire, thanks to the context, the “Mediterranean” dimension, reinforced by the presence of sand and the essential character of the setting." [1] The project series contains sketches and installation photographs and videos. AP207.S1.2013.PR01
Description:
The project series documents "The Game of Architecture", a drawing realized in 2013. The drawing is of triangular-shaped structures made of bricks standing in a desert. This drawing is a reinterpretation of a previous project by Pettena "Situazioni Competitive" in 1971. "Here architecture, albeit with the same characteristic of competitiveness, becomes indistinct, confused, no longer the leading actor, at the mercy of an unknown context (a desert? the nature of an alien planet?) which, threatening to overwhelm it, seems to nullify its every need and characteristic." [1] The project series contains a drawing for the 2013 edition and the 2018 version, which is a digital photograph modified to show the architectural construction standing in rough water. Laundry (1969)
AP207.S1.1969.PR02
Description:
This project series documents Pettena's installation "Laundry" realized in the context of the Campo Urbano, a series of artistic events staged during a day at the Piazza del Duomo, in the historic centre of Como, in Italy, on the 21st of September 1969. Pettena was one of the forty artists, musicians, architects and art critics invited to the event [2]. For his installation, "Pettena chose to hang out washing on clothes lines, with the aim of underlining the difference between the appearance of a city and the experience of living in it." [2]. The project series contains photographs of the installation at the Piazza del Duomo, in Como, sketches of the installation, and a project description in English and Italian. Quarry (1971)
AP207.S1.1971.PR03
Description:
The project series documents Pettena's project "Quarry". It consists of a series of three drawings showing a quarry wall painted in pink washed away by a rain storm, consequently creating and leading to the formation of a small lake of pink water at the bottom of the quarry. A camera, placed on the opposite side of the quarry, films the whole process. "The drawing traces an intervention in three successive phases in a context modified by the work of human beings and then reconquered by nature [...]." [1] The project series contains drawings of the three successive phases, one showing the painted wall, the second showing the rain storm, and the last one showing the lake formed at the bottom of the quarry with the pink stained water. It also includes project descriptions in English and in Italian. Source: [1] Gianni Pettena website, https://www.giannipettena.it/italiano/opere-1/nat-quarry-1971-1/ (last accessed 11 November 2019)

Description:
The project series documents "Poltramaca", an installation that consists of half an armchair carved into a tree trunk and half a hammock hanging from a tree. The installation was presented at the Salone del Mobile, Galleria Megapoli in Milan in 1985. "[...] the trunk, cut down and abandoned, is thereby reconquered by its context, “caught” by a net that connects it to a still living tree." [1] Two other editions of the installation were presented at the "Gianni Pettena one-man show" exhibition at the Museo Piaggio, in Pontedera, in 2003, and at the Galleria Enrico Fornello in Prato, in 2009. The project series contains sketches, three drawings showing the variations of the armchair-hammock design, notes, and photographs of the installation in 1985, 2003 and 2009, and a digital video of the 2009 installation.
