Summary:
Typography today exists in conflict with classical font design and contemporary influences such as analogue distortion, screen applications, street culture, deconstruction, hand lettering and illustrative letter forms. "Type one" not only presents an overview of the diversity in current typography, but also reveals where conventions have become established and where valid new approaches exist. In addition to a selection of typefaces and their applications, the book features articles by and interviews with international experts such as Jean François Rappot, House industries’ Andy Cruz and Ken Barber, Norm and Professor Tanja Diezmann. Topics range from the democratization of the font creation process by the computer to how much existing approaches are based on the same fonts. These texts are edited and commented by Silja Bilz, former project and product manager for Corporate type at the renowned Linotype library. While "Type one" provides practical context and examples, it also investigates the experimental and inspirational side of font design. This combination makes the book a resource for anyone seeking an up to date exploration and understanding of typography.

Summary:
Commissions for buildings and works of art from public authorities or private clients are an important means of promoting art in public areas, and they offer artists the opportunity of realising projects in an architectural space outside that of the museum. For architects these artists often provide a first interpretation of emergent architecture with its spatial functions, and in this way they generate so-called “hybrid zones” because the architectural function can also be perceived as a work of art in the context of public art. This book presents in text and image some 20 interventions and projects in Basel and Zurich, created from the 1990's to the present day. Cross references to other European cities help to provide an overview of the international debate, and it initiates a controversial discussion on the present and future possibilities for art and building through statements and text contributions. These are provided by architects including Diener & Diener, Herzog & de Meuron, Peter Märkli, Morger & Degelo, artists such as Renée Levi, Jean Pfaff, Rémy Zaugg, art historians and other experts in relevant fields.

Summary:
Is less really more? At long last, designers, artists, and architects have rediscovered the evocative effect of patterns and are paying homage to décors once rejected as superfluous, by covering lamps, chairs, rooms or entire façades with stripes, polka dots and camouflage designs. Indispensable for anyone interested in contemporary trends in design, art and architecture, this softcover edition of a classic is quite simply opulent and dazzling – a lavishly illustrated overview composed by experts. This book presents the various multidisciplinary approaches to patterns, showing the many functions and fields of application. Using examples of contemporary work by internationally renowned designers such as Fabio Novembre, Claesson Koivisto Rune and Karim Rashid, by architects such as Herzog & de Meuron, Steven Holl and Sauerbruch Hutton, and artists such as Bridget Riley and Gerhard Richter, a kaleidoscope of colours and forms are laid out before the reader. New interpretations of traditional motifs are illustrated, as well as the impact and influence of technical innovations such as laser engraving and digital milling on the creation and realization of patterns today.

Summary:
Barcelona offers a prime example of the co-housing model as an asset prized for its use value as opposed to investment. This book is a compilation of cooperative housing projects in Barcelona, both complete and under construction. It explains how the co-housing process is managed in terms of architecture, urban planning, financing, legality, and taxation, and delves into the experience of living in a community fueled by a cooperative spirit. The content of the book presents designs for cooperative housing, accompanied by a critical vision of the model’s implications in terms of the transfer of use or co-living. Finished and inhabited projects are compiled along with ongoing projects, to offer a general view of this way of living in Barcelona. The case studies are explained by members of cooperatives, experts and designers who look at aspects of design, sustainability, construction and urban life. This book is a tool for understanding the design and construction of co-housing and the community life that goes on there.

Summary:
Lux Guyer (1894–1955) was the first female architect to establish her own studio in Switzerland in 1924. One of her key designs is the Obere Schiedhalde, a single-family home above Küsnacht near Zurich. Completed in 1929 and temporarily occupied by Guyer and her family, it is a variation of her legendary SAFFA-Haus of 1928. Between 2012 and 2018, the building and the surrounding garden were extensively and carefully restored by Basel-based architecture firm Christ & Gantenbein together with Sven Richter, cofounder of Richter Tobler Architects in Basel. Working in close collaboration with the Canton of Zurich’s office for the preservation of historic monuments, they also called in experts for a historically conscious overhaul of the building. Together with the current owners, the architects made it their mission to not only preserve this significant architectural monument of Swiss Modernism but also make it accessible to the public through this book. Conceived by graphic designers Ludovic Balland and Annina Schepping, "Lux Guyer—Obere Schiedhalde" offers in-depth documentation of the renovated Obere Schiedhalde.

Summary:
For the first time, the development of interiors and furniture in Switzerland from the end of the nineteenth century to the present day have been surveyed and documented. Following introductory essays by Lucius Burckhardt and Stanislaus von Moos, both experts in design research, there are seven main chapters each focussing on a period of 15 years; these are complemented by detailed information on those masterpieces which can be considered to define the epoch. Some 20 representative interiors reveal the significant changes which have taken place in living space in the 20th century. A fully illustrated catalogue of over 300 objects from furniture to ceramics and household objects and around 150 biographies conclude the publication. Much of the information was previously inaccessible and this volume contains invaluable details regarding the origins and the production of the objects. The book is a fascinating compendium of the great classics in Swiss design, with rare early works as well as new pieces. A large part of the material has been photographed especially for this publication and the model furnished interiors have been drawn to the same scale.

Summary:
The Ballets Russes was a phenomenon of the early twentieth century, permeating daily life wherever the company traveled and leaving a lasting impact on dance, theater, and the visual arts. Sergei Diaghilev, impresario from 1909 until his death in 1929, fused the most avant-garde, groundbreaking movements in dance, choreography, art, design, and costume into unique and stunning productions. The work was exciting, and always new, and it stretched the limits of the possible in art. The color, form, and material in costume and set design astonished audiences, transforming every corner of Western culture in the twentieth century. The Ballets Russes and the Art of Design explores these revolutionary icons and ideas, illuminating Sergei Diaghilev's profound revitalization of the arts, which continues to influence us today. Ten essays by internationally recognized experts and 200 color and black-and-white illustrations—many from private collections and never-before-published—discuss a broad range of topics, including set and costume designs, graphic design and poster art, photographs and postcards, Diaghilev's presence in the media, and private and museum collections of Ballets Russes treasures.

Summary:
“Soft power” emerged as a concept in the late twentieth century to describe international relations based not on military or economic strength, but on influence. While the resources of “hard power” are tangible—force and finance—soft power resources include ideas, knowledge, values, and culture, as well as the ability to persuade. This volume discusses soft power from the vantage point of museums and demonstrates how they are quietly changing the world. With contributions by thirteen experts from ten countries, Cities, Museums and Soft Power reveals the world’s 80,000 museums to be sleeping giants. Two major characteristics of soft power—the rise of cities and the role of civil society—are pushing museums from the margins toward the center as these institutions serve as education hubs, employers, magnets for creative industries, and engines of economic development. Meanwhile, the growth of technological networks and connectivity has enabled this soft power to spread even farther and deeper across the Internet and groups of people. Whether cozy and local or internationally renowned, museums possess a cultural strength that extends far beyond their walls.
