This project series documents the first scheme and final design of The Design Exchange in Toronto from 1988-1994. The office identified the project numbers as 8801 for the first scheme and 9231 for the final design. Although two project numbers were used, materials for each project cannot be clearly separated. This project consisted of the renovation, restauration and expansion of the old Toronto Stock Exchange building, located at the base of the Ernst Young Tower in the Toronto Dominion Centre. The Design Exchange (D/X) was a new cultural institution, dedicated to the economic and cultural promotion of design in the country through exhibits, lectures, banquets, trade shows and other events. With Shirley Blumberg as the partner-in-charge, the art deco style trading floor was restored as an open event space, with the original Charles Comfort murals retained. In order to create harmony between the art deco building and the neo-modernist renovations, bold, linear architectural elements such as stairs, walls, screens and bridges were reiterated throughout the design. A staircase from the trading floor led to an overlooking bridge and created a connection between the trading floor, trading gallery and resource centre. Other areas of the 40,000 square foot building included an exhibit space, café, member's lounge, retail store, seminar rooms and administrative offices. Coloured planes of cobalt blue, chartreuse and ochre were set against a material palette of red oak, cherry, limestone, glass and stainless steel. The project is recorded through drawings and photographs dating from 1988-1994. The drawings are mostly originals and include a large amount of sketches. Also included are plans, elevations, sections, perspectives, details and drawings for custom furnishings. The photographs show the completed interiors of the building.

Series 1, Water Flux and Scrambled Flat, 2002-2010, documents the conception and evolution of a project that was originally a farm building and later became a geology and glaciology museum and research center focused on the Swiss Alps. The project was never realized. R&Sie(n) conceptualized Scrambled Flat as an experimental farm. The project goal was to reconcile European Union’s agricultural regulations, imposing a separation between animal and human living, to the community of Évolène traditional way of living, contiguously with animals, benefiting from the resources they offer. As conceived, Scrambled Flat creates an environment where fluidity between the existence of the animals and the humans is materialized. The size of the form is also adapted from a typical local rural house and exploits the heat of the animals and the insulation of the hay. For this project, R&Sie(n) approached the mayor of the community with the design proposition. The mayor then called for a competition, while also changing the program to an ecology museum and research center illustrating the local effects of global warming and the thawing of the Alps. R&Sie(n) won the competition with Water Flux, a reinterpretation of Scrambled Flat. The project was intended to uncover and exorcise the anxieties of ecological disaster, and the principle of flux related to seasonal change and, more broadly, climate change. The firm designed rooms that reproduce the geological and meteorological environment of the high mountains making it visible and experimental, offering refrigerated spaces for art installations and scientific demonstrations. The concept was also to build with the use of new technologies such as digital modelling, point scanning, and computer numerical control (CNC), combined with ancient local knowledge of knocking on trees to decide which specific pines have the best wood for construction. The building is designed to be constructed with local lamellar wood milled by nearby CNC. The resulting parts would be used for the structure, the insulation, the waterproofing and both the interior and exterior finishes. The design includes a grille wrapping the building, reproducing the profile of traditional houses and enclosure and making it possible to hold the snow inside a typo-morphological imprint. Therefore, the transformable envelope of the building reacts to the rhythm of the seasons. In the winter, the structure would appear like a solid cut-out of ice and snow, with cavities similar to those found in glaciers. In the summer, it would resemble piles of stones used in these areas to make borders. A small pool would collect rainwater and supply it to an interior artificial snowmaking system designed for the gallery. Transformation of the water is an integral part of the design. The records contain images of plans, sections, details for the structure of the façade, renderings, plans of the engineered structure, and photographs documenting the conception of the models with the CNC machinery. The Rhino 3D modelling files are also part of the records along with AutoCAD models and a video documenting the process. The records contain two physical models: a smaller polymer model at 1:20 scale representing the whole structure of the building, and a larger 1:1 latch wood fragment representing detail of the structure in its integrality.

File documents Inter-Action Centre, a completed project for a community centre commissioned by Ed Berman and the Inter-Action Trust, for a disused site at Talacre Public Open Space in Kentish Town, Camden, London. The construction was divided into two phases. Foundations, steel frame and trusses were constructed first and could be used for open-air community events while funds were being raised for the second phase. Phase II included cladding, fittings, finishes, services prefabricated units, and log cabins. The building was intended as a flexible short life-span building in which the interior spaces would be independent of the roof and exterior walls. Functional areas suggested by Cedric Price include: assembly halls, classrooms, rehearsal rooms, studios, areas for performance, media resources, lounging and dining, and a gym and a nursery. Series 1, BMW Welt development and construction records, 1994-2015, documents the design development and construction phases of COOP HIMMELB(L)AU BMW Welt building, located nearby the BMW headquarters in Munich. This series also contains some materials from the competition phase, corresponding to less than 2000 digital files, and models from the third phase of the competition. More than half of the records were created from 2003 to 2006. Records show how COOP HIMMELB(L)AU, and the numerous consultants on the project, materialized the original concept, from Wolf Prix sketch, of this cloud-like roof emerging from a double cone suggesting an hurricane eye. To achieve this, extensive digital structural testing was done with engineers Bollinger + Grohmann. The RUR Architecture Kansai-kan of the National Diet Library project records, circa 1996, document the New York based firm’s competition entry for the Kansai Science City branch of Japan’s National Diet Library. Records show integration of landscape in the building’s design, exploration of the relationship between structure and surface, and a multimedia approach to building design. Records include 169 digital files, mostly CAD models and images; 42 drawings and printed renderings; and 5 models and casts.
