Summary:
Informal markets are a central feature of the 21st century's first tumultuous years. Both part of and response to the homogenizing forces of globalization, they constitute a volatile shadow system of heterogeneous micro-locations. Informal Market Worlds maps this new kind of urban system emerging from ongoing deregulations and realignments. Bringing together imaginative architectural approaches with texts by key contemporary thinkers, the two-part Informal Market Worlds explores new ways to interrupt the dominant logics of neoliberal governance. With groundbreaking research, the hefty Atlas includes 73 case studies, in locations ranging from Kabul's post-conflict Bush Bazaar to Arizona's Snow Birds hipster markets. Offering a global perspective on the conflicted realities of informal marketplaces--from survival activities of the urban poor to transnational clandestine trade networks--these analyses reveal how informality has become a political instrument in the struggles around global market integration.

Summary:
Owen Jones was, and still remains, an influential force in the world of architecture and design. His prolific work is captured here in its various stages through drawings, architectural plans, and photographs. "Owen Jones: Design, Ornament, Architecture & Theory in an Age in Transition" fills a gap in the history of Victorian design. In his early career Jones was recognized as an authority on Oriental design. In the 1850s he was commissioned to decorate the interior of Joseph Paxton's World's Fair Crystal Palace in London. Other projects include St. James' Hall, the Crystal Palace Bazaar, Osler's Glass Shop, and Eynsham Hall at Oxford. In 1856 he completed his "Grammar of Ornament", which remains one of the most influential works on design published and is a source for many artists and designers today. More than just an architect, Jones' skills were applied to designing interiors, books, textiles, furniture, and carpet.

Summary:
Walker Evans (1903-1975) was one of the most important and influential artists of the twentieth century, producing a body of photographs that continues to shape our understanding of the modern era. He worked in every genre and format, in black & white and colour, but two passions were constant: literature and the printed page. While his photographic books are among the most influential in the medium's history, Evans's more ephemeral pages remain largely unknown. From small avant-garde publications to mainstream titles such as Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, Architectural Forum, Life and Fortune he produced innovative and independent journalism, often setting his own assignments, editing, writing and designing his pages. Presenting many of his photo-essays in their entirety Walker Evans: the Magazine Work assembles the unwritten history of this work, allowing us to see how he protected his autonomy, earned a living and found audiences far beyond the museum and gallery.

Summary:
In 1911, Le Corbusier (1887–1965), then twenty-four and still going by the name of Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, embarked on a grand tour of Eastern Europe, Turkey, and the Balkans with his friend, August Klipstein (1885–1951), an art history scholar. Together, the two visited Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Bulgaria and Serbia, Constantinople, Mount Athos, and Athens, as well as Rome and Pompeii. Both young men kept detailed notebooks throughout their journey with drawings, sketches, and photographs created en route. While Le Corbusier’s notebooks were published in 1966 as “Journey to the East” and went on to attain wide renown, Klipstein’s records of their travels have remained relatively unknown. In “Klip and Corb on the Road”, Ivan Žaknic´ brings the notebooks together for the first time to explore the fruitful creative symbiosis of this friendship and offer a new perspective on this seemingly well-known undertaking. The two men sometimes address the same events or subjects—a seasick passage, the bustle of a Turkish bazaar—and even copy one another’s work. But while Klipstein’s reflections tend to focus on research for his thesis, Jeanneret’s impressions evince a more romantic mindset inspired by his immediate surroundings. The book includes copious previously unpublished material, including the complete text of Klipstein’s diary, as well as that of the correspondence between Jeanneret and Klipstein. Reintroducing readers to Klipstein, who went on to a career as a prominent art dealer, it also offers insight into a key influence in the artistic development of Le Corbusier in his formative years. The book also includes an essay by British architectural historian Tim Benton.
