Summary:
In The Preparation of the Novel, a collection of lectures delivered at a defining moment in Roland Barthes’s career (and completed just weeks before his death), the critic spoke of his struggle to discover a different way of writing and a new approach to life. The Neutral preceded this work, containing Barthes’s challenge to the classic oppositions of Western thought and his effort to establish new pathways of meaning. How to Live Together predates both achievements, a series of lectures exploring solitude and the degree of contact necessary for individuals to exist and create at their own pace. A distinct project that sets the tone for his subsequent lectures, How to Live Together is a key introduction to Barthes’s pedagogical methods and critical worldview.

Summary:
This volume presents 70 color photographs of America imbued with both clarity and nostalgia. Italian photographer Luca Campigotto takes us from the canyons, deserts and coal-mining ghost towns of the American West to Idaho’s large auto cemeteries, to the Bronx and other industrial fringes of New York City, to a town in Montana whose brick architecture is reminiscent of Edward Hopper’s paintings. The solitude of the wild frontier and the distance of the urban periphery alternate between dazzling daytime lights and mysterious nocturnes. Each photo is accompanied by short poetic notes—a journey of personal memories which echo literary and cinematographic works—serving as an evocation of some American topoi, above all, the timeless myth of “on the road” traveling.

Summary:
Technology has become the architect of our intimacies. Online, we fall prey to the illusion of companionship, gathering thousands of Twitter and Facebook friends, and confusing tweets and wall posts with authentic communication. But this relentless connection leads to a new solitude. We turn to new technology to fill the void, but as MIT technology and society specialist Sherry Turkle argues, as technology ramps up, our emotional lives ramp down. Even the presence of sociable robots in our lives that pretend to demonstrate empathy makes us feel more isolated, as Turkle explains in a new introduction updating the book to the present day. ''Alone Together'' is the result of Turkle's nearly fifteen-year exploration of our lives on the digital terrain.

Summary:

Summary:

Summary:
"Lost Dog" opens with a cat inquisitively turning towards us - a character inviting us to a vast land. And we can indeed speak of character, so much does "Lost Dog" resemble a fable. Throughout the pages, Bates is the solitary traveler on an odyssey, coming across with elusive figures, crossing depopulated places that, always, retain the mysterious traces of a past presence - wreckage landed on the branches of a dead tree, details of a forgotten domestic life, blood stains on immaculate snow... And sometimes, among the crystal-clear images, a tenderness emerges here and there, rays of warmth found in a woman's gaze or in a benevolent flame. Through valleys and mountains, Ian Bates offers with "Lost Dog" a portrait of a mysterious American North West, whose strangeness and magnificent solitude he captures like no other.

This publication documents the keynote lecture, speeches and discussions held throughout the conference given by architects and artists such as Vito Acconci, Peter Cook, Kenneth Frampton, Peter Kubelka, Andrea Lenardin Madden, Thom Mayne, Jonas Mekas, Eric Owen Moss, Peter Noever, Wolf D. Prix, Alexis Rochas, Michael Rotondi, Elfie Semotan and Lebbeus Woods. The publication also includes a DVD of Abraham's now-famous last lecture, “The Profanation of Solitude,” given at the Southern California Institute of Architecture, only hours before his untimely death.

Summary:
For readers of ''The Sixth Extinction'' and ''The Uninhabitable Earth,'' ''Concrete'' explores the history of a material that has been central to architecture and design for thousands of years-and what its future looks like in a world experiencing rapid climate change. Imagine a world without concrete: there'd be no skyscrapers, no grand irrigation projects, no out of season vegetables, no highways. There would be a shortage of electricity, more mud in some places, more solitude in others. But because of the fossil fuels and other resources required to make concrete, there also would also be less carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and less dramatic climate change. In ''Concrete: From ancient origins to a problematic future,'' Mary Soderstrom tells the story of concrete's surprising past, extravagant present, and uncertain future with careful research, lively anecdotes, and thoughtful reflection.
