Summary:
In pre–Revolutionary War America, libraries were member-driven collections for the elite; it was not until 1790 that Benjamin Franklin helped to establish the first public lending library. Throughout the subsequent centuries the library has evolved, but always remained central to the cultural life of the nation. Thomas R. Schiff’s photographs trace the history of the library through aesthetic and style while featuring legendary architects such as Charles F. McKim; Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge; and I. M. Pei. "The library book" beautifully captures the shifting architectural styles and missions of the library in sweeping 360-degree panoramas—from the very earliest American libraries to the modernist masterpieces of Louis I. Kahn and others. In his introductory essay, acclaimed author and library lover Alberto Manguel considers the story of the library in America, its evolving architecture and cultural role, and how the American model reflects the archetypal idea of the universal library. Including brief descriptions of each unique library, this book brings bibliophiles into one hundred libraries across the nation.

An increasing group in contemporary society is rejecting agricultural production, as it exists today. Particularly prevalent, is the heated debate about conditions under which livestock is kept and slaughtered. Economic and ecological issues, animal and environmental protection, ethics and a (more) conscious meat consumption play an important role. The conflicts between these aspects must be negotiated in the public discourse, raising the question of which role architecture can play to improve this condition. The exhibition "Architecture for pigs" presents solutions for a modern agricultural pork production that meet the new demands of today’s critical consumer. In 2016, the organisers of an architectural student competition (KTBL and Stiftung LV Münster) began their research for new perspectives on agricultural architecture, livestock and societal engagement with agriculture. With this exhibition, Aedes Architecture Forum kicks off its 40th anniversary program. It is a continuation of the exhibition series on the role of architecture in the development of rural regions.

Hospital architecture reflects society in a state of flux. How do we care for our patients? What working environments do we offer caregivers? How does the hospital fit into our cities? When it comes to planning a hospital, architects are not only faced with the challenge of meaningfully combining function and construction. They also design rooms that temporarily serve patients, staff and relatives as a working and living environment. Christine Nickl-Weller and Hans Nickl have been engaged in the field of hospital construction for 40 years. From their rich wealth of experience in practical work and academic research, they view the hospital on a variety of levels. This holistic view is enriched by contributions from renowned authors from disciplines as diverse as psychology, health management, landscape architecture and art history.

Summary:
From its origins in the late 19th century to its decline in the 21st, Sheila Liming's ''Office'' narrates a cultural history of a place that has arguably been the primary site of labor in the postmodern economy. During the post-war decades of the 20th century, the office rose to prominence in culture, achieving an iconic status that is reflected in television, film, literature, and throughout the history of advertising. Most people are well versed in the clichés of office culture, despite evidence that an increasing number of us no longer work in offices. With the development of computing technology in the 1980s and 90s, the office underwent many changes. Microsoft debuted its suite of multitasking applications known as Microsoft Office in 1989, firing the first shot in the war for the office's survival. This book therefore poses the question: how did culture become organized around the idea of the office, and how will it change if the office becomes extinct?
