Summary:
Colour is rarely the sole focus of a poster, especially since colour photography is a given component of most advertising. Thus it is often assumed that the graphic design world will always be brightly coloured. But as this latest volume on the Poster Collection of the Zurich Museum für Gestaltung sets out to prove, there are advantages to working in black and white. In a compilation of international posters created over the last 40 years, "Poster Collection 08" brings to light a surprising variety of approaches where the colour of the paper and the black of the ink are the only materials at hand. Those materials alone provide the creative will with the tools it needs to create a succinct statement. Examples come via designers like A.G. Fronzoni, Werner Jeker, James Victore and Büro Destruct, and range from the political manifesto to the poetic abstraction, from modernist cool to postmodern eclectic.

Summary:
In The Sympathy of Things, Lars Spuybroek argues that we must "undo" the twentieth century - the age in which the eighteenth-century ideal of the Sublime became a technological reality. Spuybroek returns to the insights of the great nineteenth-century art writer John Ruskin, for whom beauty always comprises variation, imperfection and fragility. Spuybroek argues that these three concepts not only define relations between humans and their designed products but between all things: "sympathy is what things feel when they shape each other." Spuybroek then compares five twinned themes in Ruskin - the Gothic and work, ornament and matter, sympathy and abstraction, the picturesque and time, ecology and design - with later philosophers and theorists such as William James and Bruno Latour.

Summary:
This publication studies methods for creating flexible looks for public and cultural institutions. The classic logos normally used by companies are the result of a unique process of compression and abstraction. By contrast, flexible looks do not conceal their diverse components of identity in a logo, forming instead a complex family of symbols from them. In the combination of a basic logo and a family of symbols, the look is in a position to represent the fundamentals (the philosophy of the institution, its program) and the specifics (e.g., temporary exhibitions and events). The author describes the effect and potential of looks and offers the criteria that distinguish fully developed, dynamic looks. Case studies of famous designers such as Karl Gerstner and Ruedi Baur enhance the analysis.

Summary:
Otto Baumberger (1889–1961) was one of the first Swiss “poster designers”. His original graphic creations led to a reduction bordering on abstraction, in which graphic and textual elements underwent an increasingly potent synthesis. Thus, in its variety, Baumberger’s work embodies and exemplifies the history of Swiss poster art in the first half of the twentieth century, as the painterly artist poster gradually evolved toward graphically oriented corporate design.

Summary:
Sonia Delaunay was a true pioneer of modernist abstraction; breaking with the figurative vocabulary that subordinated color to subject matter, she placed dynamic color interaction at the core of her vision, whether expressed through painting, book illustration or costume and textile design. Drawing inspiration from both traditional Russian crafts and the modern frenetic metropolis, Delaunay’s work reflects the drastic changes ushered in by industrialization. Through her polyvalent practice, Delaunay helped construct the new modern woman that she herself embodied: equal parts avant-gardist, creative entrepreneur and businesswoman. This richly illustrated catalog showcases the range of Delaunay’s work as it unfolded over 60 years, from abstract paintings and works on paper to textile design, garments, fashion photography, books and carpets—even a brightly colored sports car.
