Summary:
The Pavilion examines both the history and the contemporary state of pavilion architecture, something of a niche genre in the field, but with a long history of masterpieces. It consists of two parts: first, the examination of a group of twentieth-century pavilions, and second, a collection of essays that survey historical and more recent examples. This outstanding analysis was produced by students of architecture at Frankfurt's Städelschule. In the theoretical section, well-known authors discuss the materials used in pavilions, starting with influences from the Orient, India and Asia, and moving on to significant twentieth-century pavilions and recent temporary buildings that seem to occupy a space between art and architecture. In addition, the book documents the research and development of a summer pavilion for the garden at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt produced by the offices of Barkow Leibinger and Werner Sobek.

Summary:
Long Island’s North Fork is a pastoral quilt of vineyards and farms by the sea. To the north are the sandy beaches of Long Island Sound and to the south a collection of harbors and fishing villages overlooking Peconic Bay. Stretching out some thirty miles from the mainland, this narrow peninsula is a place of serenity and beauty. Photographer Jake Rajs has captured the spirit of the North Fork - the glorious colors of sunrise and sunset, the calm waters, and the vast expanses of fields and wetlands. He focuses on architectural landmarks as well - the Victorian houses on Shelter Island, eighteenth-century barns, the Orient Point Lighthouse - to create a complete portrait of this unspoiled land. Complementing the visual presentation is an essay by Jesse Browner that evokes the spirit of the North Fork and its people, tracing the evolution of the land from colonial farms to the vineyards that have emerged over the past thirty years.

Summary:
In 2023, Swedish photographer Gerry Johansson (born 1945) roamed the state of Maine with a Rolleiflex, curious to make new pictures in a region of America he first encountered in the work of Paul Strand five decades ago—he found Strand’s views of New England "boring" at the time—and also wondering, "Why is American photography so focused on the west?" Johansson’s Maine echoes the formal restraint of his earlier books, notably American Winter, Spanish Summer, Meloni Meloni and Pontiac, sequencing nearly 200 black-and-white duotones alphabetically by their oddly poetic Northeastern town names (Bath, Friendship, Purgatory, etc). Somehow, none of the Maine pictures draws more attention than any other, and the flawless and playful compositions never seem to repeat. As in all of Johansson’s work, endlessly inventive arrangements of architecture and landscape orient the viewer in a specific geographic and cultural place while generously sharing his way of seeing, walking and thinking with a camera.

Summary:
Following the invention of the daguerreotype and calotype processes in 1839, views of ruins, classical statuary, and the antiquities of the Mediterranean and the Orient were among the first images produced by pioneer photographers. The unique accuracy and immediacy of photographs fundamentally changed aesthetic and scholarly approaches to the artifacts of the past. This book, published to coincide with the inaugural exhibition at the Getty villa, explores the intellectual underpinnings of the relationship between antiquity and photography in the period 1840-1880. Drawing on the extensive collections of the Getty museum and the Getty research institute, this illustrated volume presents an introduction to the subject, followed by a detailed discussion of the influence of photography on archaeology, by an analysis of the ways antiquity is depicted, and by biographical studies of two major photographers, Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey and William James Stillman. Portfolios of works by Maxime Du Camp, John B. Greene, Francis Frith, Robert Macpherson, Adolphe Braun, and others appear between the essays.
