Summary:
Far from passive containers or neutral fields where particular objects are to be desired, bought, and sold, department stores constitute spaces formative for both shopping behaviour and culture. In the constantly changing environment, in an interplay between retail strategies and responses to customer behaviour, a negotiation is going on of what and who is of importance, who is to be given exposure, and what needs to be hidden. As such, department stores form intricate examples of how shopping spaces are sites of negotiation of public culture, and of reproducing or creating norms and ideas in society. Inspired by the work of Baudrillard and Butler, Wigley, and Williamson, this book investigates how department stores work as situating structures, in which we not only find what we want, but what we should want, who we are, how our society is arranged, and our role in it - an investigation that challenges our understanding of architecture and planning as well as of society in general. Daniel Koch is a researcher and teacher at the School of Architecture, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. Structural Fashion is his doctoral dissertation that develops and improves the theories of his former work on spatial systems as producers of meaning, refocusing the main inquiry onto departement stores.

This issue of TEXTE ZUR KUNST puts forward two psychanalytical concepts that lend themselves to describing destructive tendencies, as well as to possible ways of redirecting aggression away from violence and into creative work: the death drive and sublimation. Contributions subject these concepts to a discursive stress test and set them in relation to historical and contemporary examples of artistic production. Although this does not alleviate structural hopelessness and its affective dimension, it makes these amenable to negotiation.

Summary:
In today’s context, concepts such as component hunting, urban mining, and biosourced materials do not merely denote technical strategies. Rather, they articulate ways of reconfiguring the relationship between architecture, materiality, and productive processes. A critical response to the demands of the environmental agenda, this issue explores how these three approaches can shift architectural focus towards an active engagement with resources, their cycles, and material trajectories. It challenges the notion of architecture as a finite object, advancing instead a material ethic in which design becomes an act of negotiation, translation, and ecological and economic commitment.

An obstacle to our progress, Saul argues, is that Canada has an increasingly ineffective elite, a colonial non-intellectual business elite that doesn't believe in Canada. It is critical that we recognize these aspects of the country in order to rethink it's future.

The woven/Intersected/Reciewed series, gathering preparatory material, documentation on the works, and essays by critics or the artists themselves, these volumes contribute a discussion around commissioning, the notions of public vs. private collection, and the relationship between artists and patrons. Liam Gillick’s book shows the realization of his designs in conference rooms, corridors, and offices, coinciding with his sustained interest in the negotiation of a middle ground between corporate culture and contemporary art. The volume is accompanied by an artist’s essay discussing the dissolution of the public/private dichotomy into a grey zone of semi-public/semi-private spheres.
