Summary:
From 1960–1980, both eastern and western Europe experienced a construction boom of new dimensions. Cybernetics, the science of planning, and sociology, as well as the new possibilities offered by technology and production, paved the way to large-scale processes and systems in architecture and urban design, which favored technocratic and utopian concepts. Increasingly, architects and planners saw themselves as designers of comprehensive infrastructure and mega-structures in a technology-focused world. The authors assesses these developments on the back of a knowledge transfer between East and West. It confirms a change in attitude that can still be felt today – recession, social changes, and environmental problems led to criticism of the then contemporary concepts of modernity.

Summary:
Imagine a power plant that is also the perfect place to have a picnic. On the foreshore of St. Kilda, Australia rises just such a structure—one that merges renewable energy production with leisure, recreation, and education. This volume imagines a world where the infrastructures that power our cities are designed to be reflections of culture, where public parks provide clean electricity to the city grid, and where the art that brings depth and vibrancy to our lives also measurably responds to the challenges of climate change. ''Energy Overlays'' provides a glimpse into a post-carbon future where energy infrastructure is seamlessly woven into the fabric of our cities as works of public art.

Summary:
Rethinking strategies for rural development is a global pressing challenge. To stimulate the international discussion Aedes Architecture Forum Berlin is presenting a remarkable example from rural China. Dynamic urbanization processes shape large parts of the world and China in particular. The young population migrates to the cities, whereas many elderly people and children remain in the rural areas. While in the German hinterland railway lines are shut down and the digital infrastructure is more than inadequate, the rural exodus in China is countered with new high-speed train lines and even the most remote mountain villages are being connected by broadband coverage. But also small-scale architecture creates positive future prospects for cultural, social and economic development.

Summary:
Aglaia Konrad’s photographic work probes the social, cultural, economic, political, and historical parameters that inform architecture and urbanism. 'Japan Works' is the result of her journey through Japan in the autumn of 2019. Using a pre-compiled list of places with exceptional architecture, Konrad took thousands of photos in Tokyo, Itoigawa, Kyoto, Nagoya and Osaka. In addition to mostly iconic, post-war Metabolist architecture, Konrad also took a large number of photos of nonspecific architectural moments and infrastructure that, with the same intensity, give their own impression of the architectural landscape in Japan. Free associations of full-page photographs alternate with contact sheets documenting her itinerary. These are informed by postscript glosses written by architect and critic Julian Worrall.

During the so called European migrant crisis from 2015 on Germany got known for its ''welcome culture'' towards refugees. Since 2015 millions of refugees have arrived to the country and the state has had to react quickly trying to provide sufficient housing for the immigrants. In the fast paced urban planning process material and immaterial borders are created, making it challenging for the refugees to settle. Through photographic documentation, aerial views and official documents of regulations regarding refugee housing complexes the book raises a questions about the architecture’s impairing effects for refugees integration to German society.

Summary:
Our cities are "smart" and getting smarter as information processing capability is embedded throughout more and more of our urban infrastructure. Few of us object to traffic light control systems that respond to the ebbs and flows of city traffic; but we might be taken aback when discount coupons for our favorite espresso drink are beamed to our mobile phones as we walk past a Starbucks. This publication explores the experience of living in a city that can remember, correlate, and anticipate. Five teams of architects, artists, and technologists imagine a variety of future interactions that take place as computing leaves the desktop and spills out onto the sidewalks, streets, and public spaces of the city.
