Summary:
This publication documents the impact that elevators, escalators and moving walkways have had on the urban landscape, building types and culture worldwide. The mid-nineteenth-century invention of the elevator safety break, in conjunction with other developments such as the steel frame, facilitated the construction of the skyscraper and so helped to transform the appearance of our cities and the places in which many of us live and work. The turn-of-the-century inventions of the escalator and the moving sidewalk have left their indelible mark on railway stations, airports, retail spaces, hotels, offices, factories and elsewhere. "Up, down, across" makes a long-overdue and valuable addition to urban and architectural studies and cultural history.

Summary:
Rethinking strategies for rural development is a global pressing challenge. To stimulate the international discussion Aedes Architecture Forum Berlin is presenting a remarkable example from rural China. Dynamic urbanization processes shape large parts of the world and China in particular. The young population migrates to the cities, whereas many elderly people and children remain in the rural areas. While in the German hinterland railway lines are shut down and the digital infrastructure is more than inadequate, the rural exodus in China is countered with new high-speed train lines and even the most remote mountain villages are being connected by broadband coverage. But also small-scale architecture creates positive future prospects for cultural, social and economic development.

The last few years have seen some of Norman Foster's most remarkable and ambitious projects around the world. In London, the Swiss Re headquarters - the capital's first ecological tall building - has become a popular landmark, while the arch of the new Wembley Stadium is already a familiar element on the skyline. This new catalogue documents the practice's work over the last four decades. While detailed descriptions of more than eighty buildings and projects, it offers a comprehensive survey of the practice's diverse activities as urban planners, architects and industrial designers, covering a spectrum from the scale of the city masterplan to the detail of a door handle. It includes designs for airports, railway stations, brigdes, museums, schools, universities, offices, private houses, furniture and products.

There are only a few figures in modern Czech art as legendary as the architect Jan Kotéra. In his lifetime, Kotéra was a symbol of the spirit of modernity, a pivotal role-player in early 20th-century Czech fine art culture. A student of Otto Wagner, friend of Josef Hoffman and early member of the Viennese Secession, Kotéra brought international standards to Czechoslovakia, introducing his country's architects to the work of Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright while retaining an interest in folk structures. Some of his most notable structures and designs include the City Museum in Hradec Králové, the Mácha villa in Bechyne, his own villa and studio in Vinohrady, and his housing colony for railway employees in Louny.

Summary:
Greg Girard’s photographs of Vancouver from the 1970s and early 1980s show us the city’s final days as a port town at the end of the railway line. Soon after Vancouver began to be noticed by the wider world (Expo 86 is generally agreed on as the pivotal moment), the city began refashioning itself as an urban resort on nature’s doorstep and attracting attention as a destination for real estate investment. At that time, many of Vancouver’s downtown and east side streets ended at the waterfront, an area filled with commercial fishing docks, cargo terminals, and bars and cafes for waterfront workers and sailors. Wandering these streets, living in cheap hotels, Girard photographed the workaday (and night) world of the city where he grew up.

Summary:
The diaries of Muhammed Ali Effendi Sa'udi, a civil servant and accomplished photographer, offer a rare glimpse of the Hajj through Egyptian eyes at the beginning of the twentieth century when the Ottoman Empire was on the wane and the advance of the Hijaz railway threatened to upset vested interests in the old pattern of pilgrimage. Sa'udi twice accompanied the Amir al-Hajj, Ibrahim Rif'at Pasha, attached to the official Egyptian caravan. His story of these journeys combines the thoughts of a devout Muslim with fine detail on the hardships and health hazards facing pilgrims, the high-level intrigues, and the ever-present dangers of taking photographs. The authors have compressed the diaries into a readable narrative with selected quotations, illustrated with Sa'udi's photographs.

Summary:
In post-colonial Africa, «White Elephant» was the name given to buildings erected with international money and never put to use; relic of an enormous waste. Europe has its own fair share of such mammoths: a pratically unused railway station designed by Santiago Calatrava near Lyon, the frame of an Aldo Rossi shopping mall in Berlin, a lonely feeder road in the middle of nowhere, now slowly being reclaimed by nature... On his search for new developments in ruins, the Swiss photographer Christian Helmle discovered a vast amount of monumental solitary buildings and complexes throughout Europe's cities and countrysides. Relieved of their original functions, the barren structures have lost any connection to their environments, appearing alien and surreal. Throught Christian Helmle's shots they develop their own individual, touchingly melancholic aesthetic.

Summary:
Transport buildings - railway stations, airport terminals, bus and coach stations, motorway service areas, filling stations, and garages - are such a part of everyday scenery they are easily overlooked. This book is the first to take a close look at the architecture of British transport buildings of the twentieth century, a period during which transportation systems, methods, and even purposes underwent enormous change. The contributors to the book consider both well known and unfamiliar transport buildings from a variety of intriguing viewpoints. They explore the design and promotion of the London Underground, the battle between road and rail, the intentions of architects - to glamorize travel, to calm fears, to accommodate huge numbers of travellers - and the political and cultural significance of the transport buildings that have become a major part of modern life.
