TAKK begins from a deliberate displacement. In the work of Barcelona-based Mireia Luzárraga and Alejandro Muiño, architecture becomes a negotiation among climates, bodies, animals, plants, materials, economies, technologies, rituals, and political imagination. The human subject is no longer the sole protagonist. TAKK’s research-driven practice engages with feminism, queer ecologies, and how design may contribute to more egalitarian societies. More than 20 projects by TAKK are featured, along with an in-depth analysis of their work. Also in this issue, "Shells of Sensation" explores architecture in which nature is translated into a spatial experience humans sense and remember.

Summary:
Photographer Mike Slack lives and works in Los Angeles, and the images in this book were primarily made in the American south-west. They are concise and direct, yet driven by an emotional ambivalence that hovers between stark environmental dread and calm intimate reverie. Slack surveys an overheated terrestrial ecosystem, offering a luminous topography of monumental details and mundane vistas. Transcendental in mood, his vaguely sci-fi photographs envision a sun-blasted wilderness of synthetic and organic stuff, flourishing and disintegrating on its own terms, as if engaged in an ageless negotiation just beyond our grasp. Where does nature end and its opposite begin?

For decades, the Inuit of northern Québec were among the most neglected people in Canada. It took The Battle of James Bay, 1971-1975, for the governments in Québec City and Ottawa to wake up to the disgrace. In this concise, lively account, Zebedee Nungak relates the inside story of how the young Inuit and Cree ''Davids'' took action when Québec began construction on the giant James Bay hydro project. They fought in court and at the negotiation table for an accord that effectively became Canada’s first land-claims agreement. Nungak’s account is accompanied by his essays on Nunavik history. Together they provide a fascinating insight into a virtually unknown chapter of Canadian history.

Summary:
The past decade has seen phenomenal growth in the development and use of virtual worlds. In one of the most notable, Second Life, millions of people have created online avatars in order to play games, take classes, socialize, and conduct business transactions. Second Life offers a gathering point and the tools for people to create a new world online. Too often neglected in popular and scholarly accounts of such groundbreaking new environments is the simple truth that, of necessity, such virtual worlds emerge from physical workplaces marked by negotiation, creation, and constant change. Thomas Malaby spent a year at Linden Lab, the real-world home of Second Life, observing those who develop and profit from the sprawling, self-generating system they have created.

Summary:
At a moment when the discipline of Canadian art history seems to be in flux and the study of Canadian visual culture is gaining traction outside of art history departments, the authors of Negotiations in a Vacant Lot were asked: is "Canada" - or any other nation - still relevant as a category of inquiry? Is our country simply one of many "vacant lots" where class, gender, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation interact? What happens to the project of Canadian visual history if we imagine that Canada, as essence, place, nation, or ideal, does not exist? The authors of this collection stand at the multiple points where national culture and globalization collide, however, suggesting that academic investigation of the visual in Canada is contested in ways that cannot be contained by arbitrary borders.

Summary:
The creation of Soviet culture in the 1920s and the 1930s was the most radical of modernist projects, both in aesthetic and in political terms. "Modernism and the Making of the Soviet New Man" explores the architecture of this period as the nexus between aesthetics and politics. The design of the material environment, according to the author, was the social effort that most clearly articulated the dynamic of the socialist project as a negotiation between utopia and reality, the will for progress and the will for tyranny. It was a comprehensive effort that brought together professional architects and statisticians, theatre directors, managers, housewives, pilots, construction workers. What they had in common was the enthusiasm for defining the "new man", the ideal citizen of the radiant future, and the settings in which he or she lives.

Summary:
The architects Alfredo Brillembourg and Hubert Klumpner, over the last ten years, have developed the Caracas/Venezuela based Urban-Think Tank (UTT) into an international network to face the challenges of uncontrolled urban growth in the dense informal centers of the 21st century Mega-cities. The exhibit will include photos, videos and projects that question the notion of contemporary architecture and urbanism that pulls together some of the Urban Think Tanks most consistent propositions. UTT has moved to propose design solutions, to make that crucial passage from protest to project in an effort to make a real impact in Caracas and in Europe and North America, presenting the relevance of their ideas for the Stadtwerk in Salzburg and for a Vertical Gym in Spanish Harlem, New York. ‘Moderating Urban Density’ exhibit shows how negotiation and design can work in the interface between the social conflicts and the production of new urban infrastructures, architecture, and sustainable human environments in the so called “barrios” of the informal mega city.

Summary:
Museums are frequently sites of struggle and negotiation. They are key cultural institutions that occupy an oftentimes uncomfortable place at the crossroads of the arts, culture, various levels of government, corporate ventures, and the public. Because of this, museums are targeted by political action but can also provide support for contentious politics. Though protests at museums are understudied, they are far from anomalous. "Tear Gas Epiphanies" traces the as-yet-untold story of political action at museums in Canada from the early twentieth century to the present. The book looks at how museums do or do not archive protest ephemera, examining a range of responses to actions taking place at their thresholds, from active encouragement to belligerent dismissal. Drawing together extensive primary-source research and analysis, Robertson questions widespread perceptions of museums, strongly arguing for a reconsideration of their role in contemporary society that takes into account political conflict and protest as key ingredients in museum life.

Summary:
"Recycled theory" is a multidisciplinary dictionary made of entries in form of texts, drawings and quotes, which explore the concept of “recycling” in design cultures and in the theories that nurture them. Usually we recycle things, objects, spaces but more often we return on principles and approaches to rearrange them, put them back into circulation, and override them. The practice of recycling is therefore placed in an area of negotiation between memory and amnesia, it brings out the unexpected self-regeneration potential of what exists, our ability to preserve and reinvent it, even through its partial breakdown. The words here collected (from “amnesia” to “zone”) identify materials, procedures, ambiguities, deviations, and potential nexus of recycling, recording terms that tell the different processes of production and sense of city and landscape after recent socio-economic upheavals and the widening of preservation as the prevalent scenario for the project. Recycled Theory comes out of the collaboration of eleven Italian universities engaged in the research “Re-cycle Italy: New Life Cycles for Architecture and Infrastructure of City and Landscape.”
