Summary:
"Architecture and retrenchment" explores the "neoliberal turn" in architecture, through the rise and fall of the Swedish welfare state. There are few better case studies of architecture's role in the retrenchment and dismantling of the welfare state than Sweden, the birthplace of the world-famous "Swedish Model" and now home to Europe's fastest-growing inequality.
Through eight in-depth architectural case studies, Helena Mattsson analyzes how neoliberalism has created conditions for a new built environment which was once closely integral to the welfare system, examining how new architectural strategies and techniques were developed in order to protect the agency of architecture in a newly re-organised society, and revealing the role of architecture in creating new types of segregation, discrimination, and social stratification.

Throughout its history, high rise has been a symbol of the welfare state for better or worse. Here, Holly Smith tells a new story from the perspective of those who lived there, exploring how residents grappled with this brave new world above the old skyline. Through a series of historical moments based upon prize-winning research, we confront the human story of high-rise Britain. Interrogating the complex inheritance of mid-century urban reconstruction, Smith shows how these buildings became a crucible for the welfare state’s reimagination over the decades.

AV monographs dedicates each issue to a theme involving a city, a country, a tendency or an architect, featuring essays by prominent scholars and commentaries on built works and projects illustrated in detail. With edorial text "The fatigue of Europe" by Luis Fernandez-Galiano : (...) " Europeans vaunt about their tenacious experimental tradition in the field of housing, but a distracted review of the latest residential projects leaves a bittersweet aftertaste. Apart from some odd technical displays and a few typological novelties, the majority of the projects presented in this issue stand out for their geometric rigor, their material sophistication and their compositional elegance. Rather than a product of the Welfare State, they are a consequence of the welfare of the State – promoter of a large number of them – and also of the social prosperity made evident by the boom of private real-estate development. Examples of the refinement of the European elites, these works also bear witness to the creative fatigue of a continent that finds itself demographically aged, economically less and less competitive, and with a knowledge industry that continues to lag behind the universities and laboratories of the American north, and now also in comparison with the dynamic surge of Asia.(...)"

Author Owen Hatherley shows how our past is being resold in order to defend the indefensible. From the marketing of a “make do and mend” aesthetic to the growing nostalgia for a utopian past that never existed, a cultural distraction scam prevents people grasping the truth of their condition. The Ministry of Nostalgia looks at the creation of a false history - examining the austerity of the 1940s and 1950s, which saw the development of a welfare state while the nation crawled recovered from the war. Hatherley examines how this period has been recast to offer consolation for the violence of neoliberalism, an ideology dedicated to the privatisation of common wealth.

Summary:
Between the early 1930s and 1950s, modernist architecture underwent a spectacular change of fortune in Britain – from a small-scale avant-garde movement, to the official, state-funded architectural idiom of the post-1945 Welfare State. FRS Yorke (1906–62) was an architect who completely followed that trajectory. His book "The modern house" (1934) placed his detailed knowledge of European architecture as an introduction to modern architecture for generations of architects, and provided inspiration for his own designs. But it was only after World War II, and the social and political change which came in its wake, that Yorke was able to turn his reputation as a modernist into commercial success. As his pre-War contemporaries gave up architecture or moved abroad, his practice – Yorke, Rosenberg and Mardall – drew on his experience of working on large, state-funded construction projects during the War, and participated in the transformation of Britain’s social and physical fabric with its new housing, hospitals, schools, universities and airports. This book concludes with a memoir by David Allford, who worked with Yorke and Yorke, Rosenberg and Mardall from 1952 until 1989.
