Summary:
This volume provides one of the first overviews of Japanese photography to be published in English. Drawing on extensive research, Lena Fritsch traces the development of Japanese photography chronologically, from the severity of post-war Realism to the diverse ingenuity of photography in contemporary Japan. Interspersed are original interviews with some of the most influential photographers of each era, including Daido Moriyama. ''Ravens and Red Lipstick'' offers a survey of Japanese photography's recent history. Fritsch masterfully frames each movement with their business, education, and art-institutional backdrops- she shows the consumerism and intense political debates of 1960s and '70s Japan, for example, to be central to the rough style of the ''Provoke'' artists.

Summary:
The past seventy-five years have been a time of extreme social and cultural transformations worldwide. Political and social upheaval, often contentious, disorienting and polarizing, is now a daily reality. Whether migration crises, territorial disputes, gender inequity, class divisions, racism, war, gun violence or environmental concerns, we live in a world rife with ideological and tribal conflicts. Since its inception, photography has captured defining historical moments, serving as either a tool or a document of protest—or both. In placing photobooks next to posters, DIY zines and independent journals, ''Flashpoint!'' explores the diverse roles and varying aesthetics that photography in print undertakes in its support of protest and resistance. Is it a “tool” conceived through an “aesthetic of urgency” to be used during events as they unfold, as in an anonymously designed poster or ink-stained fliers plastered on street walls? Or an elegantly designed photobook, published a year or more later, often with the help of well-known photographers, writers and designers, to document a past uprising? Whether outright rage or a more subtle artist-driven commentary, protest photography in print covers all of these formats and sometimes transcends rigid media definitions, as it blurs the lines between what constitutes a book, zine, journal, poster or newspaper.

Summary:
This publication is the long-awaited collection of essays, reviews and lectures by Tod Papageorge, one of the most influential voices in photography today. As a photographer and the Walker Evans Professor of Photography at the Yale University School of Art, Papageorge has shaped the work and thought of generations of artist-photographers, and, through his critical writings - some of which have gained a cult following through online postings - he has earned a reputation as an unusually eloquent and illuminating guide to the work of many of the most important figures in twentieth-century photography. Among the artists Papageorge discusses in this volume are Eugène Atget, Brassaï, Robert Frank (with Walker Evans), Robert Adams and his close friend Garry Winogrand. The book also includes texts that examine the more general questions of photography's relationship to poetry, and how the evolution of the medium's early technologies led to the twentieth-century creation of the artist-photographer. Among the previously unpublished pieces are an unfinished poem written in response to Susan Sontag's On Photography, a profile of Josef Koudelka and a commencement speech delivered at the Yale School of Art in 2004. The book also includes a number of interviews given by Papageorge, ranging in topic from his own photographic work and background in poetry to his energetic observations on the art of photography.
