Description:
This project series documents the design and construction of the new National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, Ontario from 1983-1988. The office identified the project number as 8303. In 1977, Parkin Architects Planners won a limited architectural competition for their design of the new National Gallery of Canada. However, after cited lack of funds, and controversies over the chosen site as well as how the competition was run, the newly formed Canada Museums Construction Company sought another design and architect for the new National Gallery. The building site was also moved from its original location near the Canadian parliament buildings on Wellington Street to the corner of Sussex Drive and St Patrick Street. Eventually, Moshe Safdie, in joint venture with Parkin Architects Planners, were chosen as the architects for the project. Parkin was the minor partner in this joint venture and his firm's work seemed to focus more on construction than design. The dispute over this decision can be found in the textual records of project series AP018.S1.1976.PR23 in this fonds. This project was commissioned by Public Works Canada and the Canada Museum Construction Company, both federal government agencies. The project is recorded through drawings, photographs and textual records dating from 1976-1989. The drawings consist largely of structural and construction drawings for the project. Some drawings in this project series were prepared by Public Works Canada. The textual records for this project include specifications, financial records, change order documentation, correspondence, interoffice letters, documentation on the competition controversy and competition reports. The textual records also focus heavily on a dispute between Parkin/Safdie and the client regarding the architects' professional fees.

Project series documents Poli's design and development work on the Supersurface project created with Superstudio in 1972. Part of Superstudio's project, "Five Fundamental Acts: Life, Education, Ceremony, Love and Death", included films created on each theme, Supersurface was the first in the series ("Life"), and was shown at the 1972 exhibition "Italy: The New Domestic Landscape, Achievements and Problems in Italian Design" at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. The final film had a running time of 15 minutes and was shot in colour on 16 mm film. Material predominantly includes project drawings, collages and sketches, along with a textual and drawn storyboard for the film. The storyboard was sent in a folder made by Poli, which has been retained as part of the fonds. Material in the folder has been kept in the order in which Poli transferred it. Of note are also 3 larger drawings, one of which is a collage of photos featuring Poli, and another is an immense brightly-coloured collage of a young woman on the edge of a sea with a machine floating beaming down on her. These drawings have been signed Alessandro Poli-Superstudio. Also included is a copy of "L'Espresso" magazine dated 4 June 1972 (no. 23), featuring Umberto Eco's article "Dal cucchiaio alla città".

The project consisted of preserving and restoring a historic building designed by Ettore Sottsass in the 1930s and adding a new construction built in a gap between two sections of the building the two volumes of the building. "Through the glazed connection, the new volume maintains a certain distance from the existing volume and is itself split into two parts, creating in practice a pedestrian intersection between the new and the old building and between the two sections of the new building: a pedestrian intersection that is laid out on two distinct levels." [1] The project series contains sketches, site plans, floor plans, elevations and sections. Series 2, MarkeTrac and OrderTrac, 1998-2007, chiefly documents Asymptote’s work bringing 3DTF online through the development and implementation of two web applications. This series includes textual and born-digital components, and chiefly dates from 2000 to 2001. MarkeTrac represents the most significant expansion on 3DTF. Running as a subdomain of the NYSE website for much of the early 2000s, it allowed users to monitor data from a personal computer using the 3DTF interface. Though there were other efforts bringing real-time stock data online at this time, MarkeTrac is significant in that it was the first to include a major data visualization component. Later additions to this project include OrderTrac, a component of MarkeTrac allowing users to buy and sell stocks online. Other unrealized projects related to 3DTF and data visualization were conceptualized during this time. The digital files in this series are chiefly raster images and video of renderings, in addition to a body of handout materials for project presentations. There is also a small body of CAD material in Maya. The textual records are largely handouts for presentation meetings, overlapping significantly with the digital files. There is also a small body of chiefly textual material documenting the conceptualization of other data visualization products.

This project series documents the construction of the Etobicoke General Hospital in Etobicoke, Ontario from 1966-1971. The office identified the project number as 6601. The project consisted of the design and construction of a twelve storey hospital building. The area of the building was 409,000 square feet and included 500 beds, diagnostic and treatment facilities, laboratories, administrative spaces, a cafeteria, and a staff lounge. This project was considered to be the first phase of construction at the time, with a medical office building and educational facilities to be added later on. The building was also designed to accommodate future vertical and horizontal expansion. John C. Parkin was originally hired for this project while he was working at the firm John B. Parkin Associates. This firm eventually evolved under new ownership, and was referred to as Searle Wilbee Rowland and later, as NORR. John C. Parkin left this firm during the project and continued work for the Etobicoke General Hospital under his new firm Parkin Architects Planners. All three firm names are present within materials for this project. The project is recorded through reprographic copies of drawings, including a presentation board, dating from 1968-1976. These drawings include as-built drawings, site plans, floor plans, elevations, sections, details, and construction schedules.
