Potteries Thinkbelt
AP144.S2.D56
Description:
File documents the unexecuted project, Potteries Thinkbelt, conceived for North Staffordshire, England, United Kingdom. The proposal called for a network of educational facilities for 20,000 students to be located over a 100 square mile area northwest of London. Moveable components, including fold-out lecture/demonstration units, rail-based teaching units, self-teach carrel units, faculty units, and housing units, were to be dispersed along the rail system. Existing conditions materials include regional aerial photographs with overlays of the rail system, and photographs, photo collages and panoramas of the region. Schematic sketches and drawings show the development of Price's design. Regional plans examine links between new and existing rail systems and national transportation networks and their projected use. Diagrammatic plans illustrate the relationships between recommended functions/activities attributed to specific areas. Detailed plans, sections, elevations, and axonometric drawings show housing types (sprawl, capsule, and crate), faculty and transfer areas in Madeley, Pitts Hill, and Meir. Other materials include regional land-use plans, photomontages with drawn perspectives, thumbnail sketches, life-span charts, conceptual sketches, aerial photographs and reprographic copies, some rendered and annotated. Many of the drawings were published in Price, Cedric. "PTB, Potteries Thinkbelt: A Plan for an Advanced Educational Industry in North Staffordshire." 'Architectural Design'. (October, 1966), 483-497; in Price, Cedric and Paul Barker, "The Potteries Thinkbelt", 'New Society' (June 1966) 14-17; and in Price, Cedric "Potteries Thinkbelt: Project for an Education Industry", 'Bauen & Wohnen', no. 9 (1967) 351-360. Material in this file was created between 1939 and 1987 but predominantly between 1963 and 1967. File contains conceptual drawings, design development drawings, presentation drawings, publication drawings, reference drawings, photographic material, and textual records.

Description:
This project series documents an auditorium-cum-convocation hall in India, likely sometime in the 1980s or 1990s. The exact locations of this project is unknown. This hall looks strikingly similar in design to Prakash's Tagore Theatre (see project series AP206.S1.1960.PR01 in this fonds) and J&K Theatre (see project series AP206.S1.1969.PR01 in this fonds). All three buildings were comprised of two square-shaped volumes, turned on their axis to overlap at their corners, with the stage located directly at the overlap. However, unlike the others, this auditorium's exterior had a zig-zagging ramp that spanned the entire north elevation. It is not clear whether this project was ever realized. The project is recorded through floor plans, elevations and a section, probably dating from sometime in the 1980s-1990s.

Description:
In 1929, the north Rotterdam neighbourhood of Blijodorp became the site of a municipal housing plan. Previous plans had been formulated in the early 1920s by architects Kromhout and Heijkoop but foundered due to lack of funding. Oud was brought into the project in the early 1930s and combined a perimeter block with row housing in his design of 306 dwellings for workers and eighteen buildings for seniors. The nine housing blocks faced the gardens and feature a living room, kitchen and three bedrooms with storage space situated below the elevated living level. His plans were not realized because the national government withdrew its investment in the housing market (Taverne et al. 2001, 304-310). Project series includes drawings of plans for Blijdorp Municipal Housing and a photograph of a perspective drawing.

AP018.S1.1968.PR05
Description:
This project series documents the College E building at York University in North York, Ontario from 1968-1969. The office identified the project number as 68007. This project, referred to as College E Academic and Dining Complex, consisted of a three-level building with a basement and mechanical penthouse. This project was built by John B. Parkin Associates, in a joint venture with Gordon S. Adamson Associates and Shore & Moffat and Partners. These three architecture firms formed a joint venture known as UPACE (University Planners Architects And Consulting Engineer). This project was part of a larger master plan by UPACE, which built more than a dozen buildings for the university during this time. The project is recorded through reprographic copies of drawings dating from 1969. These were a set of construction plans, details, elevations, sections, schedules and mechanical, electrical and structural drawings.
