Summary:

For the past three years, the Spain Yearbook has been complemented by a special edition of AV Monographs that is an invitation to travel the world through twelve foreign works presented by Luis Fernández-Galiano, who reflects on the uncertain contemporary landscape. The year has been marked by political, turmoil in the US, but there have been other relevant issues on the international level, such as the unstoppable rise of China and the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine. The buildings of the year include long-awaited landmarks such as Heneghan Peng's Grand Egyptian Museum, Norman Foster's JPMorgan Headquarters in New York, and Sou Fujimoto's ring for the Osaka Expo; typological revisions by Herzog & de Meuron at Calder Gardens, OFFICE for the Swiss television, and Diller Scofidio+Renfro at the Victoria & Albert Storehouses; cultural refurbishments such as those by Nouvel in Paris, Pihlmann in Copenhagen, and MAD in Rotterdam; and the tectonic displays of Grafton Architects in Fayetteville, Vector Architects in Jingdezhen, and Aidia Studio in Nicolás Bravo.

Summary:
Large-size working drawings are the foundation of any architectural process and 'key' to practical construction of a building, yet very little has been written and published about the architect's quintessential tool. This new book bridges this gap, as it draws on a vast collection of working drawings from many centuries, held by the Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich. This is a collection of plans for a wide range of architectural projects and features many representational techniques. Providing a comprehensive record, around a hundred of the collection's highlights through five centuries, are arranged by category allowing for direct comparison. All plans are depicted entirely in colour on large-size spreads and fold-outs. Full catalogue details are provided for each drawing. Various topics are covered in essays by expert authors, which compliment the images. Featured architects include respected names such as Francesco Borromini, Gottfried Semper, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Eero Saarinen, Jorn Utzon, Alvaro Siza, Rafael Moneo, Herzog & de Meuron, Peter Zumthor, Diller Scofidio or Caruso St. John.

Summary:
In the academic year 2000-2001, Yale professor and New York City based architect Peggy Deamer led two innovative courses: first, a focused seminar on the state of contemporary residential design; second, a creative studio offering house designs that drew on the discoveries of the seminar. This book, the second in a series documenting work at the Yale School of Architecture, combines work from both courses in a thoughtful and provocative study of the state of the house at the turn of the millennium. Deamer introduces the volume with an essay on three issues vital to a discussion of millennial design: newness, uniqueness, and design innovation. Designs of visiting seminar critics -- Steven Holl, Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio, William McDonough, LOT/EK, Winy Maas, and Jacques Herzog -- are showcased along with descriptive and analytical texts. Work from the studio course is divided into various themes explored by the students: image, standardization and modularity, networks and diagrams. The hybrid quality of this volume -- designs by practicing architects and students; observation and interpretation -- reflects debates and issues at the heart of early-twenty-first-century architecture.

Summary:
This book investigates the state of panoptic art at a time when issues of security and civil liberties are on many people’s minds. Traditional imaging and tracking systems have given way to infinitely more powerful “dataveillance” technologies, as an evolving arsenal of surrogate eyes and ears in our society shifts its focus from military to domestic space. Taking as its point of departure an architectural drawing by Jeremy Bentham that became the model for an entire social regime, CTRL [SPACE] looks at the shifting relationships between design and power, imaging and oppression, from the eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries. From the photographs taken with hidden cameras by Walker Evans and Paul Strand in the early twentieth century to the appropriation of military satellite technology by Marko Peljhan a hundred years later, the works of a wide range of artists have explored the dynamics of watching and being watched. The artists whose panoptical preoccupations are featured include, among others, Sophie Calle, Diller + Scofidio, Dan Graham, Pierre Huyghe, Michael Klier, Rem Koolhaas, Bruce Nauman, Yoko Ono, Thomas Ruff, Julia Scher, Andy Warhol, and Peter Weibel. This book, along with the exhibition it accompanies, is the first state-of-the-art survey of panopticism--in digital culture, architecture, television, video, cinema, painting, photography, conceptual art, installation work, robotics, and satellite imaging.

Summary:
The fine line between art and architecture is rapidly becoming harder to perceive. With the aid of sophisticated computer programs, today's most innovative architects are working on designs so conceptual they could not be realized in the physical world. Nevertheless, these sorts of forward-thinking projects are an important influence on the architectural climate. At the dawn of the 21st century, architecture is entering a paradigm shift; no longer can it be completely distinguished from art. Be they built from bytes or bricks, the projects in this book represent the imagination of the planet's most talented and creative architects. For all the latest and most important architectural projects and trends, look no further than this volume, the follow-up to our popular and groundbreaking book Architecture Now! A visiter.

Styles and lifestyles are fast becoming uniform under labels and definitions of fashion, and as an industry and a cultural form. Total Living is the point of no return in a project which, step-by-step, develops strategies whose goal it is to offer an even more sophisticated and targeted lifestyle. It is a place where there are definitions for clothes, behavior modes, and even the atmoshpheres and spaces in which one moves. Assuming the contours of a landscape of the future, this scenario raises topical themes and problems connected with the overwhelming power of consumerism. Accompanying scholarly essays consider the thematic universes of fashion designers and brands; models of total living in 20th century history; references to total living in mass culture; living and eating; arty fashion and fashionable art; the world of fashion design; the languages of shopping; urban fashion districts; and advertising as a narrative. A rich and interconnected iconographic passage visually narrates the various forms and ramifications of total living today and in the recent past through a succession of utopias, life-projects, urban visions, architecture, special homes, stores, art galleries, museums, and editorial pages and ads from fashion and lifestyle magazines. With texts by Papla Antonelli, Francesco Bonami, Michele Ciavarella, Emanuela de Cecco, Riccardo Dirindin, Roberto Monelli, Herbert Muschamp, Chee Pearlman, Michele Sernini, Dietmar Steiner, and Deyan Sudjic.
