Project
AP164.S1.1997.D4
Description:
The project series documents the design of the “Green House” for Mariano Maqueda and Olga Montón, in Pozuelo de Alarcón, in the Community of Madrid, Spain. The firm identified this project as number 103. “The project is located in a typical bit of middle-class suburbia, in which low-density housing, wasteland, amenities and clumps of pine trees intermingle, giving form to the idea of an urban existence that is in contact with nature. [Abalos & Herreros] decided to be extremely direct and to stress this aspiration by using gardening techniques. In fact, the house as a whole can be understood as an example of a giant ars-topiaria, an idea that is not at odds with the fact that it will be lived in by a landscape architect. The sloping topography is taken advantage of to build a house that has continuity with the natural environment, avoiding differentiation between the house and the terrain: the whole house is garden and the whole garden is house. The project is, then, a topological mechanism for arranging and modeling the land so as to increase and to obtain maximum enjoyment from the landscape’s weaker stimuli: the pine trees, the near-by stream, the setting of the sun over the skyline of Madrid from the house’s highest point… Natural views and artificial views: a green machine.” (ARCH270971) Documenting the project are conceptual, design development and working drawings, forms, invoices and contracts.

DR1974:0002:019:001-023
Description:
- This album contains elevations, plans, and sections for Rohault de Fleury's unexecuted project to construct a new opera house for the Théâtre Royal Italien on the site of the Hôtel du Timbre and the Ministère des Affaires Étrangères. The finished nature of the drawings, and their cohesive representation, suggests that they are presentation drawings for a prospective client(s). The unbound engraving and transfer lithograph (DR1974:0002:019:001 and DR1974:0002:019:002) relate directly to the subject matter of the album, however, they are probably later additions as they do not appear in the table of contents.

Series
AP170.S1
Description:
Series 1, Design, prototypes, and related documentation, 1996 - 2006, documents the conceptualization, design, and testing of the HypoSurface project. This includes approximately 2,200 digital design files, a three-square metre Hyposurface wall module, 44 prototype pieces, and a small amount of textual documentation. The digital files in this series contain the bulk of the documentation on the conceptualization and design of the Hyposurface project. Much of this material is richly visual, including still and video concept renderings; images, animations, and drawings of related projects like HypoStage, HypoFloor, HypoFlex, and HypoVoxel; and drawings for prototype “squids” (actuators with rubber covering). The digital files also include material that is more textual in nature, particularly the administrative files for the project, a technical dossier, as well as patent documentation (relating to the physical textual documentation).Notably, the digital materials also include interactive software, called the Aegis Simulator, which allows the user to interact with a rendering of the HypoSurface wall, mimicking the wall’s real-life behavior. Digital formats in this series reflect the range of CAD, still image, and textual documentation present. Notably, there are a significant number of CAD formats present, including AutoCAD, 3DM, DIFF, and IGES formats, consisting of almost 400 total files. The physical component of this series contains a functional three-square metre HypoSurface wall module, as well as 44 other assorted prototype pieces. The prototypes include eight surface pieces in both metal and rubber, two sample actuators, and thirty-four smaller, miscellaneous pieces.

São Victor, Porto
CD034.S1.1974.PR04
Description:
This project series contains reproductions of photographs, drawings and panels displayed in the exhibit to document the São Victor neighbourhood, in Porto, Portugal. The exhibit text explained that: ... the group of 12 houses built for the São Victor neighbourhood was one of SAAL's most important operations, despite the fact that only a small part of the project was carried out. Maintaining the urban fabric of the 'ilhas' (islands) and their internal community ties, the São Victor design combined the responsiveness inherent in the participatory nature of the project with architectural and technical precision. An important case study, it led Álvaro Siza Vieira, the project architect, being invited to design projects in Berlin and The Hague in the following decade. In many aspects, São Victor represents an ethically and politically-minded architectural practice, with a stress on understanding the link between being responsive to the voice of the people and the permanence of architectural design. (The SAAL Process, Housing in Portugal 1974–76) Álvaro Siza worked for SAAL/North with Adalberto Dias, Domingos Tavares, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Francisco Guedes, Graça Nieto, Manuel Borges, Manuela Sambade, Paula Cabral and the residents' association S. Victor, that was founded on April 14th, 1975. The first phase of the project included 32 dwellings and the second, 20 dwellings. The operation began in November 1974, with a construction date in October 1975. This project series contains reproductions of design development drawings, exhibition panels and photographs. The original material was produced around 1974-1975 and were reproduced in 2015 for the exhibit.

AP086.S2
Description:

When Gordon Matta-Clark assembled the titles to and documentation of a dozen-odd small, vacant parcels of New York property between 1974 and 1977 (later assembled and exhibited as Reality Properties: Fake Estates in 1992), it was with no well-formed agenda—other than his view that the availability of vacant and underutilized parcels [was] a direct reminder of the fallacy(...)

Synopsis:
The Ulrich Königs Chemnitz Stadium project records, 1995-1996, document the competition entry and design for an innovative stadium in Chemnitz, Germany. The project was a collaboration between Peter Kulka, Ulrich Königs, Cecil Balmond, and Arup Group, Ltd. The design was primarily driven by the theoretical and methodological processes made possible by computer-aided design, rather than aesthetics. The project records have both digital and physical components, which chiefly include renderings, wireframe drawings, digital 3D models, photographs, slides, video, and a booklet.
