Summary:
"Green city : people, nature, and urban places" looks at eleven cities the world over to see how people and nature have interacted over the course of history, and how people attempt to bring nature into cities. In each of these locations, Soderstrom examines how people have tried to make a connection with nature — how well they’ve done is both a lesson in hope and, often, a warning. Featuring chapters on Babylon, Provins (France), London and Bloomsbury, Hamilton, Chicago, Irvine, Singapore, Tanga (Tanzania), Kochi (India), Shanghai, and São Paulo, as well as recommendations on what must be done so that everyone has a bit of green to call their own. Also includes photographs and extensive notes.

Summary:
Montessori schools became trendsetting educational institutions early on, and their concept is strongly reflected in their architecture and equipment. This is the first book that comprehensively addresses architectural design, construction, and the use of materials in and the furnishing of educational spaces according to Montessori’s ideas. The book’s first part explores spatial and design principles that make up good kindergarten and school buildings. In the second part, nine case studies are featured in detail through photographs, plans, and concise texts. These examples are located in Europe (the Netherlands, Belgium, Great Britain) as well as in tropical countries (Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka). Thus, this highly illustrative volume offers practical advice and a wealth of information that is of utmost importance for the design of school buildings in general.

Summary:
A 1988 UN Habitat seminar considered issues of housing construction in "developing countries." Included in the presentation was a prefabricated building system designed by East German architects, which was used in an education and development center operated by the African National Congress in Tanzania. In this publication, a multidisciplinary and international group of artists, curators, historians and researchers reflect on the education and development centers as radical experiments in learning and living, as well as their spatial and design implementation in the context of the efforts to create a future democratic South Africa free of racism. This book focuses on why education was seen as the key to building a new democratic society. What were the immediate educational needs in those temporary learning environments? How were the educational priorities implemented spatially and creatively? And what was everyday life like for the people who lived there?
