Summary:
The Cedric Price fonds at the CCA is an inexhaustible source of provocations about what architecture is and the questions it should ask. Sofia Nannini looks here at a small but representative collection of files within this vast archive: a proposal for a light and reconfigurable livestock pen to clean and weigh cattle and sheep, which Price suggests can also become a bucolic family picnic area when not used for the animals, simply by removing the gates that control them. And it is precisely this question of control of the non-human that Nannini chooses to focus on. In the context of Price's interest in impermanence and the creative potential of human interaction and individual free will, Nannini exposes architecture's responsibility in perpetuating the assumed dominion of our species over others.

Summary:

Summary:
''Photography and Architecture: 1839–1939'' presents works that show aspects of the history of architecture seen through photography, and the history of photography through architecture. One hundred and forty-eight photographs from the collection of the CCA have been selected to demonstrate the great richness of the subject, including the origins of photography in Britain and France, the pioneering expeditions accompanied by photographers who recorded the great monuments of the world from the Mediterranean to the Far East, and the great surveys of the nineteenth century. Individual images document the expansion of the United States in works that reflect the growth of American cities. Urban renewal is seen in works from the Second Empire in France and from the 1880s in England and Scotland. Works from the American renaissance in photography of the 1920s and 1930s explore new aspects of the modern vertical city. The final section of the book is devoted to works that reflect the architectural ideas developped in Germany between the two world wars. Introduction by Phyllis Lambert.

The Montre´al-based Canadian artist and architect Melvin Charney describes the history of modern architecture as a series of significant monuments that have been reproduced and documented. Here, the unexpected events transmitted by wire-service news photographs—selected, classified into various thematic areas, and collated by Charney—confront us with the shock or recognition that allows us to see architecture from outside its presentation as an isolated monument. The choices made by Charney from the ideas enclosed in the pre-packaged “news” images order them into a “dictionary,” and show the built and inhabited world as it appears through journalistic information. This publication accompanied the Canadian entry to the Venice Biennale’s 7th International Architecture Exhibition, whose theme was “The City: Less Aesthetics, More Ethics.”

Summary:
A collection of primary sources chosen by the research fellows ''Centring Africa: Postcolonial Perspectives on Architecture'', Doreen Adengo, Dele Adeyemo, Warebi Gabriel Brisibe and Ramota Obagah-Stephen, Rachel Lee and Monika Motylinska, Ikem Stanley Okoye, Cole Roskam, Lukasz Stanek, and Huda Tayob. ''Fugitive Archives'' is not a book about African architecture or its history. It is a book about the role of primary research in the work of the fellows and about how, to centre Africa in histories of modern architecture, they had to develop new ways of finding, seeing, and listening. The sources presented here are starting points for dismantling and expanding existing architectural archives, in which what is considered valuable enough to archive remains dominated by colonial or Western knowledge frameworks. Through varied media and formats, the sources multiply narratives by highlighting diverse actors, practices, and geographies—on and off the continent—implicated in the history of modern African architecture. Rather than suggesting key, but inevitably reductive, themes, this book brings the fellows and their sources into dialogue in three sections that foreground similar methods and challenges to locating, accessing, reading, and constructing otherwise fugitive archives.
